Things have just gone on their natural course. It was not until the 00s that anime became as mainstream and widely accessible as it is today.
Streaming is also an important factor. Downloading is still too much of an effort and investment for someone who is not interested in the first place. Most people who got into anime in the 00s did so though YouTube or anime streaming sites. The advent of streaming in the 00s made anime pretty much the post popular "obscure" hobby in the world.

Wrong. Availability is way broader now than it was back then and the amount of shit that got a watchable 1080p remaster is obviously bigger. Watching shitty 480p leaves much to be desired. 1080p remasters don't. AB literally came to be 10 years, and before that torrenting anime was way more chaotic, especially given how most people are too retarded for XDCC.
