One of my favorite things about SNK is that every character can be simplified to their core. But for many characters that core value is either lost or perverted. All Reiner wanted was validation. All Armim wanted is to see the ocean. All Mikasa wanted was to be with her family. All Sasha wanted was her next meal. All Erwin wanted was to prove his father's theory. All Eren wanted was freedom.
These desire are all innocent, yet paradoxically dark because the cost that these desires come at. At the same time these desires are what make these characters human, what makes them alive. It goes back to the idea of being "born in this world". Being alive gives them the freedom to pursue their lives. But that pursuit makes the characters lose sight of their innocent desires, or become "drunk" with to cope and justify their pursuit.
In a way it makes Zeke the perfect villian. He is the least human because he has the least desire to live. All of the main characters atleast have something like Jean subtle chip on his shoulder or Hange who right now is trying to carry the legacy of Erwin. But Zeke sees living in the world as a shackle itself unlike especially Eren who believes because people are alive they have a right to be free.

Meh, I think Isa did alright (You know, not "great", but not "terrible" either) with AM. Yeah, he definitely neglected Mikasa, but if he gives her a satisfying (and well-written) arc at the end of the story, I'll consider it to be a net-positive.
His self-insert was okay with his "plans" until RTS. Yeah, it was a little off-putting in certain moments, but the plans were pretty decent until "hur dur move out at night; hur dur 3 cups 3 titans".
If a good pay-off allows you to see a "story thread" throughout the character's entire "arc" from the first chapters, then it does give validity to the character's whole arc (even if it wasn't particularly good before the end).
