The anime and manga were shoveled off to people who didn't understand what they were dealing with. They treated SSY as if it were another light novel adaptation rather than as a piece of post-apocalyptic dystopian fiction. Both production staffs failed to adequately capture the scope of the concepts explored in the narrative. If you want the best experience it's the novel or nothing.

I'm not going to pretend it's peak literature, but it's hardly bad. The novel presents some very interesting critiques of modern Japanese society. None of that was translated into the anime or manga.
