How come there hasn't been anything similar to Death Note?
Over a decade after airing, it still remains the only anime normalfags like, it's still the most popular anime on MAL, beating SnK, SAO, OPM and Naruto by a large margin. It's strange that nothing else has caught on like Death Note has, or that nothing similar to it has been produced, even by the same mangaka.
I always thought that death note had yaoi type art
Samuel Diaz
One of the few anime any of them can seriously entertain. Real world setting, crime thriller, supernatural elements are limited to the shinigami (who don't do much) and the DN itself, antihero/villain MC battling on wits instead of usual godly beam power and strength will in shonenshit, most characters are adults instead of school kids (Light starts as one, then quickly becomes a college student and is adult in second half), no comedy, no otakubait, etc.
You can get mad at this and you can stay mad, this is why normalfags dig it.

>You will immediately cease and not continue to access the site if you are under the age of 18. Now that I think about it, wasn't this hypocritical for a guy who launched the site when he was 14?
Carson Garcia
>blatant underage contrarian >shitty meme laugh image God why do I share the boards with such retards.
Dominic Gonzalez
but it's not the only anime normies like. you just listed several others
Jacob Edwards
>most popular anime on MAL The anime the most people have seen isn't really particularly important
>It's strange that nothing else has caught on like Death Note has, or that nothing similar to it has been produced That's not true at all, Death Note and Code Geass have literally the strongest recommendation ties in all of MAL. This is actually the most solved recommendation problem we could possible deal with (at least in terms of general population taste)
Also obvious fishing for recs thread is obvious.
Jordan Wood
Promised Neverland has been compared to it a lot lately, although I prefer Death Note.
Gabriel Price
>it still remains the only anime normalfags like That's because it's a plot-heavy anime with next to no anime trope. Like 99% of it could be a normal televised show without changing anything (all but the crazy laughs, really). You can't say that of many anime.
Jordan Gutierrez
This Tropes inherently decay any form of media
Gavin Carter
By whom? They're not in the same league at all. Any comparison would be made by seasonaltards. (Not implying there's anything wrong with watching seasonals fwiw, but seasonaltards think the best show of all time is a show that aired in the last season, that the best waifu of all time is a waifu from the last season, etc). These are likely the people who made that comparison.
Promised Neverland isn't bad, but 6 months after it stops airing, no one will ever mention it again.
>it still remains the only anime normalfags like Naruto. DBZ. >most popular anime on MAL MAL is irrelevant, more people like DBZ and Naruto in real life
Oliver Martin
This is exactly it. Why no one responded to it is beyond me. Its grounded with gritty colors and themes and an entertaining moral battle.
Gabriel Gutierrez
The protagonists seem really smart until you realize that they're just making huge, unsubstantiated leaps in logic one after the another. If the plot didn't make sure that they came true, they would just end up looking like retards fumbling about in the dark.
Nathan Garcia
Cant that be said for just about any show? These are fictional characters written...they have to bounce off each other to progress the plot
>it still remains the only anime normalfags like Which normalsfags
From my experience people that like Death Note typically dabble in watching other anime. Stuff like DBZ has people that watch it even though they don't watch any other anime.
Dylan Gray
>the only anime normalfags like Are we not counting Pokemon, DBZ, FMA, or Naruto all of a sudden?
Ryan Ward
The first arc of The Promised Neverland in manga was kinda similar. A shame that the story and everything went south. The total opposite of SnK who really succeeded in its perspective/genre shift
Noah Robinson
>real world setting Sure it's not a high fantasy world but it's not realistic Not with a superdetective like L existing, he might as well be batman since he operates completely outside of the law >supernatural elements Shinigami world, all the bullshit rules, shinigami eyes >most characters are adults Light is a child, Misa isn't but behaves like one, L as well, Mello, Near, Sayu >no comedy Really? Ryuk is laughing his head off half the time, L and his constant consumption of sweets, fucking Matsuda >no otakubait Light is one of the most flagrant cases of a self insert characters ever, he has a harem, multiple hot girlfriends, weird yaoi undertones with L, Misa is a gothic lolita idol >gritty colors That's just Araki making it grimdark and edgy and it being released in the mid 00s >themes What themes? Hurr durr killing is bad? >moral battle That is beyond pointless because neither L not Light care, they care about winning not the morals Death Note is beloved BECAUSE it's anime, not despite it, it embraces over the top bullshit and goes all out with great music, a fast pace and fun twists Sure after L's death is takes a complete nosedive in quality but it's still pretty good all in all
Angel Baker
Choke on Zeke's cum lmao. It's like Linkin Park. You have an edgy phase when death note is the best thing in the world, then you "outgrow" it, then you actually realize it was great
And the camera angles, and the overstylization, and the top tier voice acting, and Ryuk not looking hilariously fake, and the OPs, and the EDs, and the dramatic color shifts, and the mental battles Honestly I could go on for a while
Noah Richardson
It'd be nice if anime wasn't so full of shitty tropes. You've got shows like LotG that are perfectly watchable but contain almost none of the usual crap that comes with most anime. I wish there were a few more serious takes on the medium that doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator.
don't forget tokyo ghoul for all the edgy 15 year old goth girls
Hudson Sanchez
Yeah, remember all that Tokyo Ghoul merchandise being sold left and right at every convention for years and years? All those youtube "celebrities" making parodies and references? TV adaptations and translation on every civilized language in the world? Hell, I think the only thing more popular is Ao no Exorcist!
Jonathan Wright
Most people who watch Death Note like it, user.
Luke Morris
>How come there hasn't been anything similar to Death Note? Code Geass is very similar retard.
Cameron Ward
>it still remains the only anime normalfags like Anime is mainstream.
Jason Perez
>Light is one of the most flagrant cases of a self insert characters ever t. retard Light is intentionally written to be as unrelatable as possible.
Jayden Williams
It's kinda hilarious how, in order to relate to him, some people just outright ignore the fact he was successful in everything and liked by literally everyone around him, and turn him into some kind of nerd who finally gets to conduct his revenge on the world.
Jose Ward
Bullshit, he's a classic anime self-insert >generic Japanese highschool dude, short dark hair, high and slim physique >comically good at what he does >intelligent, nihilistic with a wicked sense of humor >supernatural artefacts literally falls to the ground next to him >girls flock to him >no personality except for wanting to be the best and so defeating all his opponents That's Netflix Light, anime/manga Light is just Kirito with lighter hair
There hasn't been anything similar to Death Note because over a decade after airing it's creators sat on their asses and did absolutely nothing with all the money they made, as is the habit of people trying to write sly parables about real world subconcious conflicts instead acting upon them, or worse simply paying these people to work for them. I guess we'll have to wait for the Netflix adaption with Tom Hanks and Dan Akroyd for a proper gamer generation hot topic take on this pressing issue of non action.
Are you fucking stupid? Bad question, yes you are. He's obviously delusional and not meant to be sided with. Who the hell has a self insert character die in the end?
