As I promised, I’ll be translating the Nekojiru manga from now on. user from the last thread, if you have been waiting all these weeks and are reading this, I’m sorry it took me so long. I tried to begin uploading the translation way earlier, but the site wasn’t cooperating with me back then so I couldn’t even make a thread. I finally managed to get a Yea Forums pass, so now I’m able to post again!
It seems that Udon 1 is already translated but I couldn’t find Udon 2 anywhere, so I began there. By now I have translated the whole volume, so I’ll be dumping it all today. If anyone knows better which chapters have already been translated, please inform me so that I won’t waste my time on those!
As for raws, I currently have Udon 1 and 2, Kamisama 1 and 2, as well as Nekojiru Dango in my possession. I also have a short colored extra chapter called Nekojiru-y Seitaka. If anyone has raws of the other books (Udon 3, Manjuu, Shokudou for example) I can translate those as well. Just give me a link to the raws.

Considering I was prepared for this to never get translated this is a lot more than I could've hoped for.
As I got interested in Nekojiru about 15 years ago it's nice to finally be able to read this and it's as good as I could hope for.
It's nice that the film seems to fit more now than it did when I mostly just had the dark comedy TV series to work with. Some of these chapters like the false awakening and Portuguese ones feel a lot closer to the film atmosphere.
Also that god forming objects from bubbles is very like the circus bit in the film.

I'm glad that I was able to make your wish come true, user! I noticed that too! That some chapters really have similar atmosphere to the film. Those two chapters as well, the one about the nap and the story of the moth - those both have that same kind of fever dream kind of feel to them as the movie. In the commentary track by Sato he does mention that Cat Soup is an amalgam of different Nekojiru stories, but with a different spin on it. Something to that effect at least.
If anybody is interested, it's up on youtube. I should warn you though, Sato barely gives out any information and for the most part just gives vague non-answers as to why something happens or why it was decided to do it in a particular way.

Yeah, it was right around the time when digital work got more popular/widespread so there was a lot of experimentation involved on all levels. Especially the scene with the water elephant in the desert stands out.

According to wikipedia, a lot of the stories are based on her dreams. LSD and shrooms are also mentioned, and at least shrooms were legal in japan in her lifetime. Might explain some of her works, I'd say.
Eh, it was always obscure here though. It had a surge in popularity in Japan after her suicide but even there it wasn't huge. Yuasa truly became huge by adapting Taiyo Matsumoto's manga and that guy's just a goddamn genius, his adaptions are always very good too although inferior to the manga, except Blue Spring, that movie was incredible compared to the ok manga.
Still, there's so much alternative manga scanned on that tumblr, it really saddens me because I know most of it will remain untranslated... At least D&Q are supposed to publish Tsuge in english, haven't heard anything about it in a long time but I'm still very much hyped for that.
She seemed to be into the right sort of music so it seems likely.
It's nice that she seemed to be into trance and electronica and did some promo art for Aphex Twin.

Blue Spring? That hasn't been adapted. Do you mean Tekkonkinkreet? Even though that looks like a Yuasa work it actually isn't. Was directed by an American (Michael Arias) actually oddly enough.
Yeah, I remember making a thread about the D&Q Tsuge project when it was announced. It's been a while and anyway if it ever comes out those issues will be mega pricey.
I've had a scan through that manga and it doesn't seem that bad. Very cartoony guro and mostly silly scat. Not really that porn-like. Without being able to understand it I can't say it if has any value though.
Having read things like Hell Season and most of Shintaro Kago's work feeling fine I'm not sure my opinion on what counts as light guro and scat counts for much though.

Pornostar is very rough, it's his first ever movie. I like it but it's heavily flawed. Blue Spring is when he perfected his craft. Matusmoto feels like he just keeps getting better and better even if my favorite thing from him is Takemitsu Zamurai and that's a few years back. Speaking of, such a big name and nobody translated Cats of Louvre... so depressing, especially since the french have been able to buy it for a long time now. At least it got licensed and I can finally read it. His upcoming series sounds really good too.

Garo and AX are magazines in which manga gets translated, like Shonen Jump or Ikki or Champion etc.
They specialize in alternative manga. There are a ton of issues and collections of manga published in those on deadscanlations tumblr. Click on the garo tag or ax tag.
