Did gendo do anything wrong? We have no idea what would happen when he fused with lilith but it didn't seem like Fuyutsuki was concerned. He does what is nessecary to fight off the angels and succeeds.

Didn't he just kick off SEELE's Human Instrumentality Project, but not because he was a super Jew and wanted to gain divinity through it like them, but merely wanted to reunite with Yui? In the end (of evangelion) he was rejected by Rei (or Lilith, or Yui) and Shinji was given control. Shinji could go through with Instrumentality or go back to before. Gendo was rejected by Rei/Yui/Lilith and given his retribution and denied whatever future Shinji chose.

Basically but in the manga he wants to end human suffering (but in a way different from SEELE) which coincides with the PS2 game ending where he sticks everyone in a VR utopia.

Yeah thats how the scene reads but it kinda negates the message of the movie.

Also we dont know what would've happened in NGE if Gendo actually became god but itd probably be a hell of a lot better than what shinji did.

I firmly believe that Gendo's Instrumentality is what NGE episode 25 and 26 took place in.

He's more grey than good. I'd consider the anti-spiral to be "better" since they had a full justification for all their actions on their own terms, whereas Lordgenome was closer to "just following orders" even if he did transition to the anti-spiral side ideologically.

How so? They were one and the same. Everyone is turned into tang, given a world where they is no individuality, no one can hurt anyone else, and everyone enjoys VR waifus. Humanity in this tang is given an arc to travel through the cosmos and become an immortal soup.

That wasn't how SEELE's went. SEELE's was literal retardation where humans can't be distinguished from one another so its essentially just a lump of biomass floating in space. No VR waifu. Anno leaned too hard into the 2deep4you scifi ending.
