It was one of the earlier fighting series that focused on supposedly non-supernatural fighters. It also had a good variety of real-life styles in it whereas a lot of the earlier mangas were based on either one style, or fake martial arts.

After that inertia and the author maintaining interest is enough to bring it to modern day.

It must be selling enough copies for the publisher to let it keep on going. Bleach got cancelled for not pulling in the numbers it used to have so either Baki Dou performed better than the Vandenreich arc or the publisher is more lax with Baki.

Wasn't there always tension between Kubo and his editors anyways? I may be misremembering, but if so then the publisher could have chopped Bleach early just to be rid of him.

Itagaki likely has a good relationship with his editors given how long he has been working.

In a brief article-essay which I have of course lost, I recall Itagaki saying that an editor had performed dogeza to him twice. He didn't elaborate much on the context, but it seems pretty clear from that that his editor(s) are not mad dogs who demand things of him.

A public hero in the sumo world and a member of the boardroom, Takanohana, was altogether ousted from the NSK because he tried to call for massive, sweeping reforms concerning Sumo Association cooperation with the Japanese police, more modernized medical treatment, and so forth. In Baki, the current Kinryuuzan's face is distinctively modeled after Takanohana's face, to the point that he didn't even try to hide it.
