I don't think it's anything like that. That's exactly why Zeus was so eager to entertain Hilde's tournament idea in the first place, because he wanted to have fun. And that was Thor's problem. The writer is weird in choosing Poseidon to act the way he does. Apollo in most Greek Stories, especially the Iliad, acts very similarly to this story's Poseidon. In that he views gods as being perfect and is overall disinterested in the humans.
