Wen ONE first writing his webcomic, he intended his series to be a parody of shounen tropes. But people don't like that shit, and generic shit was way more popular, so he went that route. People liked some of his jokes, so he repeats it 100 times.

It never really subverted that many tropes. Also there was other stuff going on around the tournament when it was on. It was basically background stuff until Saitama vs Suryui. The anime did the opposite and in the worst way possible.
