It's so obvious but sometimes I think this manga is too difficult for the majority of its readers.

Let's be honest here - Levi was Isayama's Madara and he needed a way to get rid of him for the plot to advance in a meaningful way. Sticking a thunderspear in Zeke was completely ooc. It was just stupid. That entire subplot was stupid. Levi said it himself,

He breaks the settings' laws of physics all the fucking time and it really gets under my skin because it's an otherwise pretty good story. But this entire setup was bad. It adds a sort of messiah element to Zeke's character that doesn't seem necessary/keeping in-tone with the story, even if it is exposition that alleges his connection to the royal bloodline.

There was a better way to provide that exposition for Zeke and a better way to remove Levi from interfering/holding back the plot. Alas, time is not a luxury mangaka seem to have, so this all got shoe-horned the way it did because of deadlines.

This is essentially the end of his arc where he learns that he can't force his ideals on his children like he did to Zeke.
IMO the AT was simply a gift from father to son. A father giving his son the tools he needs to fulfill his dream. In the cave he only feels despair because Rod gaslights him into thinking that all the deaths after the fall of Shiganshina could have been prevented if not for his father.

While the manga shows that Grisha's not the best father, the way that he deals with Eren is leagues different to how he treated Zeke. So much so that only one of them (Zeke) still carries that trauma with him to this day. Looking back at it, Grisha would have been in a perfect situation if the order of his sons births were reversed. Eren would have loathed being locked into Liberio like cattle taking up his role as the chosen one to save his people, while Zeke would have been happy playing baseball with Mikasa and Armin.
AT is a curse, but looking at it pragmatically, Grisha knows of both Eren's desire to join the SL and the SL's high mortality rate. We know know that if Eren were any other character his story would have ended in Trost.
