Why do so many people on Yea Forums value animation and visuals above all else in anime?
If you don't care about the important elements of an anime like profound themes, well-developed characters and a thought-provoking plot, then you're literally used to watching braindead shit like pic related that only have fancy visuals going for it.
Animation quality just goes to show their effort regardless of the budget. OPM season 1 and season 2 have the same budget, let that sink in
Liam Rogers
how much time to develop had each studio? considering JC studio had around 4 years to do so,plenty of time, but i wonder how much madhouse had at the time
What I care about the most is entertainment value, not good writing or good animation
Juan Lee
Are you retarded? This is one of the most themtically coherent anime out there and it never breaks the rules of its own world. It's an epic story about man vs reality.
Leo Smith
The development of the visuals and animation are not only a conduit for the themes but themes in and of themselves. If you can't appreciate the way techniques like smears/sketches/general aesthetic develops across a show, you're an artlet.
Jaxon Clark
The plot is what will be shown to you on screen. If what is being shown on the screen is uninteresting, doesn't matter how well filmed or well animated it is, the overall experience will be lackluster. No matter how well I depict the scene of someone eating breakfast, in the end, it's just someone eating breakfast. It's trivial, non interesting, unimaginative and doesn't work without prior or post context.
>why do so many anime fans value animation and visuals above all else in a medium literally being called after it Not to mention if you think TTGL is a braindead show you're literally retarded and shouldn't even try to argue like this.
Hudson Foster
>No matter how well I depict the scene of someone eating breakfast, in the end, it's just someone eating breakfast. It's trivial, non interesting, unimaginative and doesn't work without prior or post context. Except every scene of breakfast being eaten does have context user. You have the context that someone chose to create this scene and what that means in the context of the industry they work within. Anime already draws from your metacontext of what filming techniques, aesthetics (including music), and styles are supposed to evoke in you, and this extends to everything from K-On! to LoGTH. It's a sign of stunted development to act as if works that play with that are lesser.
Isaac Brown
It's the Berserk effect. Good artwork goes a long way even if story is completely absent
Ethan Nguyen
It is like asking why you like a well written book, or a well directed movie, or a well designed videogame. That is because that is the fucking point, you retard.
Caleb Taylor
Imagine touting 'profound themes' as important then saying Gurren Lagann is braindead.
Nicholas Taylor
previous generations often scoff at any idea of simplier feelings like hope.
Caleb Anderson
Man if you unironicaly watch anime for plot you're retarded.
Jackson Thomas
you watch these shows with heart, of fire!
Kayden Stewart
Less than 2y
Tyler Mitchell
>considering JC studio had around 4 years to do so They haven't been working on it for 4 years. I doubt they started production a full year before episode 1 came out.
Andrew Rivera
Exactly, if I want a dense plot with complexe characters and great world building I'm just gonna read a good book.
Using TTGL as an example would suggest you are the brainlet here. It has all of those things you're looking for as well as being one of the best looking anime of the last two decades.
Ayden Murphy
Plotfags can't understand the subtle breeding propaganda of Franxx I can agree on that.
Adam Wood
Gurren Lagann's hope was kind of weird. By the end of the show, we never actually see the Spiral Nemesis resolved or how it will be resolved, actually it just ends on the indication that people are meeting to discuss it. I don't know if it was just me, but I can't really see a reason to be hopeful if when the show doesn't end with an ultimate solution.
Tyler Gray
I know that Carole & Tuesday production started in late 2017 so less than approximatively 1 year and a half one to make a 24 episodes show so I can dedice than OPM S2 started in the middle of 2018.
Tyler Jenkins
>Why do so many people on Yea Forums value animation and visuals above all else in anime? brainlets OST and characters>>>>everything
Jonathan Wilson
>anime >profound anime is literally about pretty/cool looking things moving in a fluid and interesting way. everything else is secondary. japs are literally all autistic and couldnt produce anything profound if their lives depended on it
Fairy tale-ish kind of endings are very popular and even a cliché of sorts, and TTGL shows that the story or the ideals that made the plot itself were even greater than his main character himself.
Twice.
Dominic Torres
Audio and visuals are the only thing to care about in anime. If you want the story, manga and LN are much better for that.
Adrian Edwards
I could have a mind bending ingenious plot in my show too but if I make it using stop-motion lego animation then nobody’s gonna watch it
Benjamin Morgan
That's all anybody should care about. If you like something, sing its praises and tell people why you liked it and why they might also like it. If you didn't like something tell others why you think they might not enjoy it.
Striving to present your opinions in a way that align with some manufactured objective standard is retarded. No two people will ever veiw a peice of media the same way. Somebody who likes TTGL for example should not have their opinions viewed as any less valid than people who hate it. But in the case of OP you can have opinions that are questionable at best, such as claiming to dislike something for lacking things that it is highly agreed upon that it does process.
Joshua Reed
No amount of sakuga will make a show not boring dogshit, this is something Yea Forums has yet to realize
>profound themes, well-developed characters and a thought-provoking plot I get those from reading the manga (which also is better looking in 90% of cases).
Brandon Kelly
I didn't have a source on the less than one year thing. Don't take me seriously, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was right.
Joshua Collins
this
Mason Fisher
This. Anime is almost always adapted from LNs or Manga and just like Movie adaptations of books, they have to cut corners to fit the schedule and budget. The purpose of Anime is to visually present a story. Of course the style is going to be crucially important.
I think that OP is mixing up people that value art over story with anime that uses lazy meta artstyles
>I can't really see a reason to be hopeful if when the show doesn't end with an ultimate solution. That's the point of its hope though. It's no longer hope if the end result is certain.
Thomas Hernandez
I don't know about that considering the Nippon Animator Expo shorts, while not always good, never felt boring.
Joseph Ortiz
doesn't help that everything the AntiSpiral said about humanity being weak, foolish, etc. was pretty much bang-on
Blake Cooper
animation is a visual medium? Why the fuck would you not want it to be good?
Nathaniel Baker
>You can't have both: the thread.
Tyler Scott
whatever person do this chart is a complete idiot.
Asher Watson
Besides Jin Roh, Hellsing, Opm, TTGL and Paprika i agree
William Wood
Right? TTGL could have been stick-figure still frames and it would still qualify as a masterpiece.
Bentley Jones
i hate that phrase i know some said it of bloodborne and it just isn't true
Leo Fisher
TV anime have 90-second opening themes and people still say aesthetics are less important than themes.
Also imagine being so dumb you don't understand what TTGL is trying to say.
I think OP just wanted a TTGL thread. I personally think it explores nietzschean philosophy with the optimism he always had but which is often put aside by modern readings of his work.
Liam Thomas
>Gainax basically just rehashes Gunbuster and Diebuster into Gurren Lagann >gets heralded as a masterpiece anyways Gunbuster and Diebuster accomplish more together than Gurren Lagann with only just half of the episode count and gives off the same general message and theme.
Daniel King
I didn't realize I had to pick a side. I might be retarded, but i value shows that excel at what they're trying to do.
Jose Perry
Why do you care about other people? Whenever I watch a show I try to enjoy it, and if I do, I reflect upon why I did. Then I talk to other people who watched the show and we discuss what we did or didn't like. Faggots trying to assign some sort of objective criteria to anime should get disregarded. Only pretentious dickwads who feel the need to validate their taste do that.
Samuel Jones
>anime is an entirely visual medium >hurr why do people care about the animation so much
Sakugafags who only care about animationare actually exactly as bad as pretentious plotfags like you.
Chase Russell
It often does. Are you just pretending to be retarded?
Look at your average western shit like Steven Universe or Bojack Horseman and tell me that anime isn't doing better these days.
Austin Johnson
>I heard this cartoon is popular so I started a thread by shitting on it to get attention
Well, you succeeded, I guess. The sad part is that TTGL has a way better plot and character development than 99% of anime. The whole industry is a mess, not even Hollywood produces stuff with such a shit ratio.
Caleb Perry
>OPM has no substance t. didn't watch or read
Hunter Fisher
All jokes aside, are you familiar with his work? I'm not even memeing it was really well interpreted in TTGL, at least I believe so.
Anthony Watson
That doesn't make it good.
Adrian Nelson
I am familiar with it, whether or not I actually know anything about it is another issue. I'm pretty sure he just appeals to edgy teenagers, and have since lost interest. But I'm not memeing when I say guts, Griffith, and homura (and ttgl protagonists) seem to represent my understanding of his works
Grayson White
>The sad part is that TTGL has a way better plot and character development than 99% of anime lurk 5 more years before making another post. Better yet, crawl back to MAL and stay there, faggot
>franxx and monogatari alongside good shows this chart always makes me angry
Gavin Powell
Sadly it is the edgy part that gets most attention. But the hopefulness of self-surpassing and his concept of will to power and a morality born out of love are perfectly captured in TTGL without the edge. At best I could say Homura embodies the eternal return but I don't think it ultimately reflects Nietsche's ideals. Griffith (and Guts, I'm guessin) becoming god and all that is just what you would take if you only interpreted his works at face value tho.
Julian Powell
No, but Gurren Lagann does have symbols and messages that it gradually questions and redevelops into more nuanced themes over the course of its run, all while consistently interconnecting with itself, showing the characters develop through different stages of a society, and having the plot naturally arise from pre-established variables.
It's just well-constructed. Let's take the construction of Kamina for instance. Over the course of the show he's referenced as a character, but he's also imperatively constructed as a symbol by the world itself. This is why the Kamina statue being torn down in episode 19 was able to piss so many people off, because it wasn't the long-dead person of Kamina being insulted but the ideals that brought humanity forward being shat on. This also feeds into Simon's own questioning of his Kamina-inspired ideals during that arc, and the construction of the episode itself, cutting between the reactions of the side characters who support Simon (Kittan, two of his sisters), those who don't (Rossiu, the other sister, the populace), and those who don't really care (Gimmy, Darry, Leeron), all of which further create the sense of disorientation of the ideals that had been been a uniting force.
That Dezaki technique is used in literal hundreds of anime
Juan Johnson
Is there supposed to be a point to the image?
Gavin Collins
I can't tell if this is a troll or if you're actually that stupid. Your standards for "good animation" are unrealistically high to the point that it's laughable. There is plenty of perfectly competent animation in TV anime.
Carson Ramirez
Plus several episodes of the show in the OP were legitimately movie quality, episode 15 for example had over 22,000 drawings.
Jose Cooper
If you think that it doesn't take brainpower to appreciate visuals then you're the retard
Carter Sanders
a picture tells a thousand words
Jaxson Ross
TTGL is a fucking joke >let's fight with giant drills and throw galaxies at each other but we got deep themes n shit row row fight da powah how thought provoking, am i right? you faggots killed this board back in 2008 with that meme of show. fucking kill yourself
you're full of shit, Bestguyever, now go back to /r/eddit
Bentley Green
I mean, spouting buzzwords isn't an argument either.
Jose Thomas
You need an actual point to justify your asshole bahaviour or you’re a just a little bitch.
Bentley Hughes
Everything is about execution user, even brain dead shit.
Do you like food user? Maybe you like a good cheeseburger, I do, so let me use it as an analogy. I don't get a delicious burger with cheese and think "wow this sucks because it wasn't some $100 craft burger", no, I think its delicious because it was cooked well and it just fucking is.
Sure, I can appreciate a thoughtful burger, one fancy as fuck burger that costs $200 and has an artistic vision of the cook behind it. I've been to stupidly expensive restaurants that are essentially that.
But the existence and appreciation of something like that doesn't change that I like my normal burger too.
No, GL isn't some provoking thought piece, but at the same time I'm not some obnoxious snob who thinks everything ever needs to be 3deep5me, sometimes I just want a well cooked burger.
Asher Sanchez
Not whatever you're referencing, also see >not an argument
Oliver Martinez
The poster you're replying to is a faggot but you're far, far worse. Speak only when spoken to, otherwise kill yourself.
Lincoln Brown
Imagine being so fat you look at anime and see burgers. I'm going back to s4s and /jp/, summer Yea Forums is just too cringeworthy
Far worse. No. I’m going to a slap a bitch for being a bitch. If you ever participate in a argument and sprout weak ass shit from your little mouth, I’ll slap that dick off and turn that crotch into a vagina.
Juan Morris
Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of you gargling dick.
Jace Cruz
I wish I was gay so I won’t ever meet women like you in real life.
