USSR, USA or any Nuclear power could send a missile, and then WW3 would start. With a lot of hardcore proxy wars everywhere.
Where a lot of countries got into a rather ugly situations because both sides where supplied with wargear, where the proxies couldn't stop production without going into WW3.

So from 1990s to now, we have been in the situation where Russia has rebuilt its economy, and China actually recovered from the Opium wars.

The peace isn't stable for sure but technically we're definitely living in the most peaceful era. There are far less deaths from conflict in this era compared to conflicts from 50-100 years ago where military and civilian casualties would exceed tens of millions.

The problem is that at some point globalization became a synonym for corporations taking advantage of other cultures, people, or land in the name of profit. Like spreading new ideas to mutual enrich all parties is awesome. But if all globalization is going to do is offer corporations a method to lower wages, fuck our world ecosystem with lax environmental laws, and subject people to inhumane working conditions - then globalization is no longer a force of good for our world.

Rather is a primary driver of a global existential crisis.
