Mari's from that, seems to cooperate with Kaji to get her into Nerv on its behalf, those connections still sound relevant somehow in 3 from the names Asuka calls her and her commentary on Gendo's plan, and she knows something about what Evangelions are after they're not human anymore in Rebuild. None of that is ever getting paid off, but Kaworu's been a worse fake character than that all this time.

The reason for addition is based on a silly premise that Rebuilds were going to be too similar with the Original. It's silly because Anno still re-did key scenes but worse, like Kaworu's death. Shinji had no influence over it in Rebuilds which is what made it meaningful in the first time.

As someone having just finished these I have a serious question: to what extent am I to take these rebuilds as some kind of serious effort, and as some kind of ironic meta-work? I think there's an obvious self-awareness from Anno behind many of the controversial decisions, and I was under the assumption I should be viewing it as some kind of meta-metaphor. But seeing how many people critique the films for what it is in itself it makes me wonder.

I agree 1.0 was my favorite rebuild cause it was pretty much just the first 6 episodes streamlined perfectly for an 1.5 hour run. 2.0 was and still is amazing at the end, but the build up was a bit too haremy and weak. I did like that they took a bigger focus on Rei in the rebuilds though, since her writing was kinda shafted for a portion NGE.
