I've just seen some japanese guy point out that this might actually be Kamachi's first full fantasy novel. Boo Boo had a real world outside of Ground's Nir, N Fantasy had a real world before it fucked itself sideways, and Shin Kaku Gi Kou's novel isn't even out.
The only other one that comes close is Waltraute, but it's entirely based on Norse Mythology.

But in general, as long as you know that Touma possesses a mysterious power called Imagine Breaker who can't be analyzed by the System Scan, you don't really need to read Index to understand Railgun.

She's a series regular. And not a """"regular"""" like she was in OT, like a real regular who shows up constantly and often does things. She's more of a regular than Index is by this point. She's arguably one of the top five most prominent characters in NT and her presence can be felt very regularly.

By that argument, nothing's necessary. The point is there's gonna be a limit as to how much more you can focus on her. In Index, Touma is more or less at the center of the world. As the one who possesses the Imagine Breaker, he plays a key role in many Magic Side dealings, and as the one in the center of Aleister's plan, he's vital to the Science Side. But the more Railgun goes, the less Mikoto's presence becomes necessary. Furthermore, a huge burden on Railgun is that Mikoto's development is limited by what Index sets. She can never surpass the novels in any way. The incident that starts to profoundly change her doesn't happen until NT13. She doesn't obtain the Anti-Art Attachment until NT16. She doesn't open her heart to Misaki to allow her to help stabilize her power until NT18. Those are her limitations. Railgun's current arc happens roughly at the same time as OT17.

Here's one critical weakness of Railgun: The more you follow Mikoto, the less you can ignore the presence that Touma's existence has on Mikoto's life. Out of the five arcs so far, three are connected to him. Technically, Touma appeared in the Level Upper arc, but he wasn't important there so I'm willing to give it a slide. I think the fact that one of Touma's dragons is a central piece of the current arc despite him not even being in Academy City at the time is a major sign that Railgun should probably end soon.

The greatest strength of Astral Buddy is that neither its story nor Junko have anything to do with Touma. Unlike Mikoto and Accelerator, Junko is free to grow in any direction.

Its less about her not being connected to Touma, and more about her not being in the novels much at all. You can give her character development because it wont disagree with the novels (unless it's something major like dying or leaving the clique permanently). Accelerator doesnt have limited ability to develop because he's close to Touma, it's because we've already seen his development and where it happens.

The thing is his links to Touma are one of the factors that make him such a significant character. If Touma weren't around, he'd probably just keep killing clones until Aleister eventually put a stop to it for his plans, and then he'd wander away somewhere else. I mean, shit, the only things he even cared about in the last three volumes were his new squid bride and Touma. Touma infects everything he touches. It's convenient for his own story, sure, but it's absolutely destroyed Railgun's future prospects.

Even if you ignored Touma, Accelerator still has too many things in Index that would keep his own side story from going on for too long. As the second-most prominent character after Touma in the series, he's got a completely packed schedule. The most problematic issue are his wings. We've seen every single milestone he's hit since his debut. We see the entirety of his side of the 0930 incident from his perspective. Shit's pretty fucked for him. Maybe his series can detail some of his Group activities, but once WW3 hits, his future's set in stone. We've had a very in-depth look at his character development since OT3, so it's like, what more can you even do with him? The fact that the first two arcs of Railgun happen immediately back-to-back, both during when he was living at the hospital before being taken in by Yomikawa is a major red flag. Kamachi seems to be using Accelerator to further explore Academy City's darkness, but when the pacing of the protagonist's character development is entirely dictated by the main series, he's gonna make for a poor protagonist all around.

Critical weakness is having 20 - 25 pages at most every chapter (sometimes it doesn't even reach 20) and not 30 - 40 like we used to get before Dream Ranker. When was the last time with 40+ pages chapter, Frenda vs Rakko?

Irrelevant. Touma is not the reason you can't develop a character who has already been given development in another series. Seperate it from Touma, make it someone like Fremea. You can't have Fremea show up in Railgun and get development before the events of NT7 occur, they'll contradict those events otherwise in all likliehood. Use your head rather than just sperging about how much you hate Touma.

I don't hate Touma. I'm just saying his presence is too big to keep making characters who are part of his inner circle as main characters. Luckily, Accelerator's still in the beginning stages, but you and I both know that Touma's gonna occupy more and more of his head as his story goes on. He has a habit of using his right hand for things. Aiwass comments on it. He sperges out in Russia because of it. Especially after Russia, since Touma punching him out catalyzes another bout of development.

And shortly after that she begins construction on a massive weapons system that no one understands. The fact that all this happens offscreen is the biggest problem of all.

She can be working on the AAA and create her club onscreen. Same with defending against the looters who invaded Tokiwadai. There's lots of stuff you can put in between her appearances in NT.
Railgun doesn't have to be completely seperate from Index. They can intersect and cover the same material like it did in sisters.

Accel's PV looks better then anything the manga had to offer so it is likely going to be fine. Also they have to cover like 1/50th of the content Index 3 had. Manga adaptations are always easier than LN ones

Well, production is already a lot smoother because they actually had work to show for it well ahead of time in the form of a PV. Their AD/Character Designer wasn't a faggot like Yuuichi Tanaka and left during production, so they shouldn't have issues at all on that front.

With how piss poor the manga is paced, a likely tight 1 cour is going to make it a much better experience as well. People say Director this, Director that, but it's the Series Composition that matters most and Sugihara is kind of unknown so we'll see.

For Railgun it'll probably be fine. Nagai has good connections and is experienced w/ rocky productions.

It would have been if they werent trying to cram everything into every episode. Look at skybus, that had smarter cuts and it worked fine. Of course then people would have bitched about cut content so it was a lose lose anyway.

The only two arcs that needed substantially more episodes were OT15 and OT18, both of which needed maybe two episodes more. OT14, 16, 17, 19, had minimal cuts. WW3 probably needed another episode to have Mikoto vs the base, Vasilisa, and the Pope scenes.

Most of the problems with Index 3 werent the low episode count, it was the lack of animation. I would have rather they cut some stuff and made the battles better. It would be easy to add in exposition to "fix" it. But adding in better animation is a lot harder.

The production of Accel isn't as fucked as Index 3 was when the staff who were working on other projects didn't even know they were supposed working on it until the PV at Fall fes. Added onto that the benefit of having a much easier transition from manga to anime than LN to anime and the artstyle looking much better than the source material the Accelerator anime is shaping up to be great but this is JC Staff so it might shit the bed around episode 7 if they push 24 episodes instead of 13.

hell, this one i didnt think of until just now, but misaka is strangely reminiscent of aglaya
spoilers ahead:
Aglaya comes from a fairly well off family and starts the novel not really viewing the MC as anything but an idiot; yet rapidly she falls herself falling in love with him. She refuses to admit these emotions, and becomes more and more insecure, lashing out at him in very stupid ways, ways that do not ruin his life, but reek of a girl being an idiot with her emotions.
However, I understand this could be mere coincidence, not exactly an unusual character, so I'll continue: the rival character for the MC's love happens to be a far more mature and feminine character who is unable to get the MC's love due to a past event and her own circumstances. Just like Misaki, she feels herself doomed, and, to a degree, unworthy of the MC's love. She cant be with him because she'd ruin his life and he might end up dead. So she decides to have Aglaya marry the MC instead.
Now, further like Misaka, Aglaya is known for her intellect and self dependence, as well as tomboy esque characteristics (that being not wanting to be viewed as a dependent woman), Theres more little things to mention...

I'm not saying the entire LN series is based on this one book, but I do think, not know or necessarily believe, that its more than possible that Kamachi got inspiration for Touma from this book - and as such also Mikoto, naturally.
