Slayers Special / Smash takes place before Lina meets Gourry. She doesn't just disappear, though. For example, in the video game continuity, she regularly runs into the main group, albeit only when Amelia isn't around, and it's implied that the living suit of armor in Evolution-R is Naga with amnesia.

I just started watching Slayers yesterday (started with the OVAs, just finished the first movie), and I was really disappointed to find out that Naga isn't in the TV series at all. I'm really enjoying the dynamic between her and Lina, so it's a shame she just disappears.
How does the TV series measure up to the OVAs/movies? Are they worth watching?

The first series is acceptable. There's a few things that happen in it that make you go "well, THAT escalated quickly" but there's nothing absolutely remarkable about it in comparison to the OVAs. NEXT is probably peak-Slayers. The theme song is a banger, the extras are fun instead of being worthless, the drama (albeit heavy-handed) hits home, and the climax delivers much more strongly than the light novels, which is really saying something. Try is its own monster, unusually dark once the plot gets going and full of lore, but suffers from the worst filler in a series that really drags it down. The ending, however, had a lot of heart put into it.
Revolution / Evolution-R aren't necessarily bad, but thanks to one tag-along character, it really isn't good. It's really telling when the best episodes in these two seasons are filler episodes. However, if you really like Naga, you just might like a few select episodes of Evo-R, for certain reasons.

Well, hopefully Slayers is your cup of tea. For me, Slayers is at the top of its genre for what was released in the 90s, but there's always other things like Lodoss War or Orphen if it doesn't suit you. There's just so much love here, though.

Short answer: it doesn't. Slayers with Naga > Slayers without Naga, by far. But the TV series isn't bad, it's just not as good. Next and Try are the best. First series is boring (Amelia helps when she finally shows up). Revolution and Evolution are kinda bad.
