Why do people keep posting this meme system. It literally does not make sense.

How retarded can one be?

O

It can't do anything, though. The limitation on Nen is that you can't do absolutes, which is loose but it is still there.

>the best power system in fiction
Wrong.

It's a representation of every single type of power found in every single shonen manga ever that have supernatural powers.
Despite of that the author had no intention to this power system to be this representation.

All false. Categories aren't all there is to Nen. Not by a longshot. The MCs don't even have a Hatsu until Chapter 130 or so.

Also, you can't do things like Time Stop or All-cutting Sword with Nen.

Enhancement: Kaio Ken, Sennin mode, etc.
Emission is literally any energy ball ever made in Dragon Ball series.
Conjuration is every stand in Jojo.
Specialization is also every stand in Jojo.

>Also, you can't do things like Time Stop or All-cutting Sword with Nen.
why not? If you can turn King Crimson into a hatsu, why can't The World be one?

I'm more talking about "classification method ".
I'm not talking about if it is possible in Hunter X Hunter lore.

Future sight is established as a thing. Time stopping is too supernatural given what has been stated and shown.

You're beyond retarded.
Specialisation makes it so that nen can literally do anything.

Pitou is the best girl and is my wife

Those stands would easily be classified in Specialization and conjuration class at same time.
The fact of being able to exist in Hunter X Hunter lore or not does not change the fact that every power in shonen can be classified in this system. It's not perfect as a power system for manga but still good to classify the powers.

>you can't do absolutes
Halkengurg says hi

MY

By definition, Nen doesn't allow omnipotence. You are just turning Aura into effects, with restrictions raising the rate of conversion. No matter how many restrictions you put into an ability, it won't reach infinity. Time stop would require freezing the whole universe in place with a specific ability. Like the all-cutting sword, there wouldn't be enough Vows to make it possible. You could probably make an ability that creates a Pocket Dimension where Time Freeze is possible, but that is several steps more complicated than just Time Freeze. You could also paralyze people in an Area with Manipulation and have them not remember what happens. But that is also not really Time Freeze.

Ephimeral 10 seconds is not really King Crimson. It is an Illusion with an AoE. Tserriednich still has a body that can be hit and time isn't necessarily skipped.

Personally, I prefer stands. Nen has its weird rules and limitations, while Araki gets to asspull his way through explaining how stands work.

RUBBER

QUIRKS

I only watched the anime, but as I understand HxH's "power system" it's basically just that a person somehow pulls a power out of their ass by shaping their aura, and the effectiveness of it is determined by their compatibility with the various categories and how clever you are with working around the "rules" of it (which in general just makes it more nonsense when they're not really bartering with anything for the power itself). Also whenever something needs to be extremely bullshit, but can't be bothered to be explained, it's just specialization.
I guess it's an okay system for allowing basically anything, but I don't really see anything impressive about it in any other sense

Specialization is still bound by no-infinite rules since you are still just turning aura into effects, like turning aura into Aura Theft, or into Future Vision, or into Past Vision (and note that in those three examples there I described 8 out of the 10 Specialization abilities that have shown up in HxH). Global effects and any kind of omni-whatever, as well as particularly strong reality warping still wouldn't be classified as Nen.

Well, your IQ needs to be at least 140 to properly understand how Nen works. Needless to say it isn't within the range of comprehension for the average Yea Forumsnon. For example the Conviction of a Restriction is a purely psychological aspect and it has always been an element of the Restriction mechanic. Chrollo says that abilities' depend on the original owner's personal definitions. Example, he says that he thinks that a corpse is a thing, but the original owner of Order Stamp did not.
Kurapika has to ask the Little Eye owner what his definition of a Small Animal is.

HxH is all about psychology, everything within the universe plays into the theme of expressing thoughts or emotions from Nen being para psychological in nature to deconstructing rockpaper scissors.

>It is an Illusion with an AoE

What about the part where he instantly sees the future

Because it's an autistic point buy table top system like GURPS. No one's going to enjoy a system that's defined by what it can't do, as much as people like to imply it. Nen is about a character wanting to do something, seeing the base concepts they have as a starting point, then figuring out how to build into it or something that can replicate it. If they're not good enough for that thing, they can try tacking on annoying flaws that they think they can deal with but might not be able to. A lot of people like the meta control the characters have for defining their abilities and some of the zany rules-lawyering that rarely leads to shit like Greed Island. Plus just bothering to connect how the occasional character got from standard stuff to nonstandard stuff.
And specialists don't have to worry about the connective tissue, but it costs them in some ways and relies on stacking adversity to get into the crazier territories.

Every power fits into a quadrant of ability: mental, physical, temporal, and enhancement. Each of those quadrants are split into two more categories, internal/external and pushing/pulling. Metals that have the same quadrant and internal/external property often have opposite effects; for example, with the temporal external metals, one slows down time within range of the user while the other speeds it up.
Usually a person only has one power, unless they are a Mistborn, who is either someone or directly descended from someone who ate the metal Lerasium, which is a physical incarnation of the source of all the other powers.
Everyone who can use these powers has something called "spirit DNA" which allows them to use these powers; eating one of the metals and then "burning" it in the stomach is a catalyst to use these powers, and the metal itself is just regular metal.
There's also two more closely linked metal systems in the same series, one that allows you to store properties of yourself into a corresponding metal, and another that uses specific metal spikes aimed at specific points on the body with the intent to create a charged spike, which then can be stabbed into someone else, causing no harm to the second person and transferring properties from the first person, including powers such as the first and second powers.

Attached: 1540326763731.jpg (727x727, 46K)

That's a lot of words, too many. That power system is flawed because it's imbalanced. Some powers are just objectively better and more practical and the rest exist only to counter said better powers.
>Coinshots can move around on invisible stilts and shoot people with coins while Lurchers can just spiderman around IF there's a metal grapplepoint.
>Pewterarms are peak physical specimens
>Tineyes have super senses so they make good detectives
>Rioters and Soothers are functionally the same and godly manipulators.

Restricting most people with powers to just one power was a mistake, that's why in the latest series after the resonance people tend to have 2 + one or two allomantic powers. The MC is a coinshot/lurcher who can store his weight to become faster on his feet or an immovable rock when the situation demands. Some power combinations are just OP, especially in a YA series where disagreements often devolve into fights.

>"It's just some bullshit magic that can do anything"
>"name 1 thing Nen can do that Magic can't"
Wouldn't the question be name 1 thing magic can do that nen can't? And we've had answers to that in series. Beyond just "loads of things without added limitations/conditions" which is what makes it a power system vs. just anything

It is only a possible future, like all future reading in HxH.

Stands are better

no u

Lurchers become more useful the higher the technology level is, metal buildings everywhere make them almost as good as coinshots, and have the added benefit of being able to retrieve their weapons unlike coinshots that send them flying with every steelpush.
Pewterarms often die of exhaustion the moment they stop a pewterdrag.
Tineyes can easily be dealt with by using a high frequency sound that basically prevents them from using their powers nearby.
Rioters and Soothers are broken until Aluminum is widely available, in which case every person of importance wears a tin lined hat.
Restricting to one power at a time allowed for the heist style team from the first trilogy, and having Kandra, Hemalurgists, Koloss and Koloss-blooded, and everything else would've made for another interesting ensemble cast instead of MC, immortal idiot, mousy female detective, and dowdy boring wife (plus special appearances from world's horniest kandra).

Time-Stopping

Specalization only exists cause there are sometimes rare exceptions that have powers that don't fit into the normal categories. It's not just some God licence

Kurapika

I like Stands too, but there are many ways in which Nen is better than Stands:

A Nen user trains Nen instead of receiving it from a McGuffin. This means that Nen is almost always a good look into the user's personality and hobbies.

Nen's internal mechanics and limitation, give Nen users clues regarding the abilities of an opponent. Example, if you see an opponent with a Sword, the most likely scenarios would be that he is either an Enhancer and uses Enhancement to toughen the blade, or a Conjurer and the blade has magical properties. If the user is a Conjurer, his strength will be low, so you can test if the sword has special abilities by testing the opponent's strength. It might not give you a precise answer, but it creates a feasible methodology. Stands don't have this dynamic because they're hardly a "system", there are like 4 rules total and they're all broken at some point.

If the fight involves two Stand users, you would need to introduce a victim to the Foe so the Jobro to see the Stand in action. Be it a random passerby, or a fellow Jobro to job and later be healed. And this, in turn, limits the types of characters Araki can write.

If you don't think Wayne is the best Sanderson character, your opinion is wrong.

Attached: tbom_broadsheet.jpg (1530x2128, 1.22M)

Think of it like Laplace's Demon. It's merely a calculated prediction of what will happen in the future, once he's used his ability he can change the factors that caused that prediction. The rest of it is just an illusion that makes everybody precise that original event happening for 10 seconds until the power fades, it's not erasing realities or timelines or anything like that. It's actually really simple

This is either bait or you actually didn't watch the series at all

>Only focusing on the obvious joke
Ok

>Restricting to one power at a time allowed for the heist style team from the first trilogy,
You mean the team that ran around like headless chickens when shit hit the fan and Vin had to bail out with her godly mistborn powers? The only time the first few books were interesting and tense were when Vin had to pass off as a highborn girl or when Kelsier decided to become a martyr for his cause. Sanderson has some good ideas, but he's not a very good writer.

I think the series would've been better if mistborn were even less common, and Vin didn't take to the powers like a fish in water; only a few months after gaining her power, she was stronger than people who had been using their powers for years. I know that powers are based on genetics so a mistborn should be stronger than a comparable misting, and she had the earring, but they could've made it a point that she is powerful but lacking finesse instead of being a mary sue.

Stands are better because they don't need to be trained, just used cleverly. No time wasted on training arcs, just on the MC's goofing around until they get jumped by an enemy stand.

>Specialisation makes it so that nen can literally do anything.
The bulk of specialists are ability thieves and exorcists. Two specialists have foresight articulated in different ways and the rest are case by case abilities that suit the users disposition. So with that in mind and how nen has been explained, global time stop is impossible to achieve through nen. At best you could create an AOE paralysis ability similar to Mizaistrom's cross game. But nowhere is it substantiated that specialists allow you to break the laws of physics, much less any category or their combination.

Let's not say that explicitly. They've been shown to be unruly without experience using them, have room to grow with genuine practice, can have their capacities straight up remolded to their user's whims to a point through constant training, and weaken with disuse. Training is a thing, Araki just rarely focuses on that beyond trial by fire.

>They've been shown to be unruly without experience using them, have room to grow with genuine practice, can have their capacities straight up remolded to their user's whims to a point through constant training, and weaken with disuse.

This seems more applicable to the long range stands. Close range stands are usually mindless punch-ghosts or armor that are potent from the beginning. Long range stands can act autonomously because of their long range and have displayed the ability to talk on many occasions.

>turned the entire series into gay twinks because you don't need to be swole to fight anymore
>has their rules and power levels constantly rewritten to suit the plot, one minute the stands are powerful enough to kill endgame DBZ characters, the next a dude with a gun is a serious threat
>every fucking stand is a punchghost + random wacky power even though originally what made SP so formidable was that it was a punchghost, sacrificing range and any kind of ability for raw stats (until the ending, at least)
Stands are awesome but Araki is a hack.

>A Nen user trains Nen instead of receiving it from a McGuffin. This means that Nen is almost always a good look into the user's personality and hobbies.
That would be fair if a stand wasn't entirely based on the user's personality. All this means is that Jojo's gets to cut out all boring as fuck training arcs.

Absolutely. I love Jojo's and the creativity that Araki brings to the table but he always wrote on a whim instead of planning out the story in advance. At least with part 7 and 8 it feels like he spends more time thinking the plot through.

>>has their rules and power levels constantly rewritten to suit the plot, one minute the stands are powerful enough to kill endgame DBZ characters, the next a dude with a gun is a serious threat
I like this though, it makes it more interesting. No matter what your stand is, you're just a dude, an animal, or if you're lucky, you can be a vampire. You might have the power to catch a bullet at point blank range, but at the end of the day, all you managed to do was dodge it. That's why someone like Mista can still be part of the main cast, it doesn't matter how strong your stand is, if he shots you in the head you will probably die.

Attached: mister .png (508x639, 958K)

I stopped after the Yazuka arc, how many training arcs have there been since then?

That's the main appeal of Jojo to me to be honest. It isn't like DBZ where Goku is immune to heat cause he can punch hard. Even Giorno will go down in a good punch if his ability can't stop it for some reason. Makes everything balanced and tense

One for heroes and he’s doing one for the villains now

Transmutation and Enhancement is a staple in every shonen''s power system so no need to distinguish them like say Fairy Tail or Naruto.

GENES

HxH fag here, you're describing Kurapika

His arrow was stopped by Vict for about ten seconds. So probably Meruem could tank it. Ergo, not an absolute.

All of that was most explicitly shown with Jotaro, particularly the bit about shifting around it's capacities, and genuine mention of training was given by Josuke. It ought to be pretty ubiquitous over the stand types

Attached: 37713132_p0.png (550x550, 56K)

>That would be fair if a stand wasn't entirely based on the user's personality
Most of the time they aren't, though. Particularly with the main cast's Stands. There is no reason for Jotaro, Josuke, Giorno, and Jolyne having the Stands they have. Not any more that they could have eachother's Stands.

Compare that to Leorio developing his tele-punch as a way to treat bloodclots and other medical issues without surgery, Killua getting Godspeed as a representation of having come to overcome and gain control of his family's abuses, Kurapika's Chain Jail representing his single-mindedness, or Gon-san representing Gon losing his childish nature due to being swallowed by revenge.

>i love Jojo just as much.

Alchemy had a lot of potential but it is used for nothing besides making stone spikes most of the time. Ed vs Greed is pretty much the only time where alchemy was used to its fullest in all of FMA.

Kurapika was not the protag until recently, he has been in ONE fight in the entire manga, and two of his five powers are telling lies from truth and healing fast, which are things authors can pretty much give to their protags sometimes as a base attribute.

The thing that gives Nen an edge over Stands is the Nen Basics. These tools are consistent, have non-combat application, and let us know what Nen users can do. Focus aura for defense, emit aura for intimidation, contract aura for stealth, or expand aura for recon. Basic but useful stuff that covers all your needs

Compare that with Stands, that sometimes allow the user to see through them, or talk, so they can be sent on Recon missions, or that can sometimes grab the user and just fly around if the plot calls for it.

>About Part 5
Was the first that came to mind. I am sure you will have similar reminiscents with part 6 fights such as Weather report and the Rods (although I can not hate at how high Araki was on pot for coming up with that shit). Part 7 Was most of the time good, although still the bad guys had some stupid ways of losing, while the good ones had some stupid ways of winning due to Araki changing every time how Johnny stands works by making it "evolve" or becoming undecided if Gyro should stick to his spin or use a stand. And my god part 8 was such a setp back, he tried to make stands simple yet used them in the most exagerated ways possible every time. And as I said before, there is a difference between bizarre and inconsistent. For example Ozone baby controls pressure and it could kill living beings.. just not plants! (convenient). While Jo2uke's soft'n wet can always do something different (also convenient) at this point just use the bubbles to steal the enemy stand, it seems he can steal everything else already.
