I remember years ago my mom got really into watching Kiminozo with me. So much so that she would constantly ask me when the next DVD would be available. My mom is a sucker for romantic dramas. While my dad was really into the scifi stuff like Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell. I think if you know what kind of movies or series your parents typically gravitate to, then just find an anime that fits within that. Also helps to start with shows that downplay the "anime" part of anime.
