I agree that Mami dying alone was necessary, but it was definitely a conscious choice to make it brutal. Japan knows about the three episode rule, aniplex shows often end episode three specifically with a shock. I don't know why the other poster has a problem with that, though. It's that kind of thing that makes watching shows with Yea Forums fun.
