That's the problem, the whole Kokoro thing was turned into shit by making Futoshi just as annoying as Mitsuru and her actually wishing for a partner switch after tons of melodrama spreading across multiple chapters. In the anime it was an on the spot decision to try and save Mitsuru without them having any connection. It seems like a fanfiction

The manga does the right thing: It cuts down the bloated cast that the anime introduced for no reason. The anime just had the nines there and did nothing with them, not even with the more notable members like Alpha and Delta (okay, the latter died for shock value and very effective gurobait).
The manga rectifies that weakness, even if that means being transparent about which characters it's not going to use.

HxH makes it very clear which characters it's going to use and then uses them accordingly. It doesn't introduce entire groups of characters to then do nothing with them. And when it introduces throwaway characters, it does for some reason (minimal as it may be) and then throws them away.
Goethe's "Faust II" has a buttload of characters, many of which only appear in one single scene. But it knows why it has them.
Franxx did literally nothing of value with the nines. That's the problem. Like Game of Thrones had a bloated cast for no purpose but "complexity".

What actual reason is there to read this? Beyond the fanservice, I mean. None of the characters even have any personality or motivations speak of. That includes the supposed main characters, the other squad members, the supposed endgame villains and literally any other character.
The only thing it does better than the mediocre anime is that it introduced the Princess of the Klaxosaur earlier, rather than just randomly introducing her during the second half to be a glorified quest-giving NPC.

Not really, no. It's just that in the anime the characters actually move and have voices so they feel more "alive", but it's all just an illusion to trick you. The side cast was just as empty if not more in the anime. Taking Zorome for example, at least in the manga he is actually shown being disappointed in the adults after the visit to the city, whereas in the anime he continues to be a papafag until the last few episodes.

Hiro was the butt of a joke for ED. Because he couldn't sync with Naomi and later failed with Ichigo. People would say that's because Naomi is gay, but that's not true as Ikuno could pilot just fine. So yeah, fix your headcanon.

During the test battle with Argentea, their connection failed almost right after it was established and it was because Hiro's mental state was a mess due to the kiss from Zero Two.
During 15, they piloted just fine together until Ichigo tried to attack Strelitzia of her own volition, without Hiro aiding her, since he didn't know what she was doing- that is what exhausted Ichigo.
During 23, Hiro had grown horns. Obviously he had Saurified beyond being able to pilot with regular humans by that point.
But by episode 15, the whole idea was that they didn't want Hiro to turn into what Zero Two was. Hiro, then chose to return to Zero Two, regardless of what it would turn him into.
If he had stopped piloting with Zero Two around the episode 14-15 mark, he could've continued to pilot with Ichigo, but he chose to continue to pilot with Zero Two. That's the whole point. He had other options at that point, but he chose to lock himself out of those options by staying with Zero Two.
