Wait, I just realized. The obvious reason they go flying is because they charge and then the inertia sends them up, but none of them are pointing their spears when they hit the shields. Moreover, several of the models end up between shields, meaning that they should at least make it into the fray of the phalanx before ragdolling, right? And why are the spear dudes being sent flying anyways, if the opposing force is going a mere fraction of their speed? Wouldn't it have made more sense to just have them fall over and be trampled, instead of this dumb prefab shit? And why are they still holding their spears when they go up in the air? That's a serious danger, and probably contributed to a lot more casualties than the initial onslaught.
