the curse of the abyss (which I will now refer to as aether) is described as a kind of fluid, it stands to reason that once the side tunnel is connected to the abyss, the aether would rapidly flood in. at best, you'd have to deal with the standard effects associated with the aether, but there's also the possibility of a rapid pressure wave filling in the tunnel.

I don't think that you can necessarily treat the field like a standard, uniform fluid.
It is already said to be weaker near the edges, and there are stable "null" spots that it doesn't seem to affect (e.g., the Village).
But perhaps it's so strong at the bottom it would "spill" over to the side. Who knows.

The point is you're training children which are less expensive investments to get you at least some profit on the first layer while also training them to be more capable adults for the lower layers than if you just took high investment adults who aren't familiar with the abyss and threw them in. You could also just make adults mull around on the first layer and train them in the same order as children but that's inefficient, why not just use children for that so you have capable adult delvers who can spend more of their adult life netting more profits in the lower layers?

He will also be much more likely to survive in the second or third layer than if he were just being thrown in with nothing but an idea of what the abyss is, no hands on experience with the curse or creatures. It is all around a good idea to throw children into the abyss, for all parties involves, even the children themselves. That's just the society Orth is.

The abyss is 1 km in diameter and at least 20 km deep. To put this in perspective, the The Kola Superdeep Borehole was just 9 inches (~23 cm) in diameter and 12.26 km deep. We don't even have the technology to dig a hole as deep as the abyss in real life, let alone the bumblefucks in MiA.

Another possibility that I've thought about is that the relics are dropped from explorers on the other side of the Abyss. If they fall from a great height on the other side then they might maintain movement upward when coming out the other side of the white ring, landing in random places in the Abyss. I came about this idea when thinking about why the layers are there, and I think it makes sense that they'd be there to keep something in (hence the curses applying when moving out of the Abyss) rather than keeping people out. But the layers wouldn't apply to objects, so they built robots like Reg to scout further.

I would assume the 7th layer would look nothing like the map. The 6th layer is relatively close and there are balloons with information that makes it up to the 5th pretty easily. Lyza's notes for one. The only thing that ever made it back from the 7th layer was the "ring".

This. There have been generations of White Whistles sending balloons up, and don't forget that Bondrewd has been operating on 6th layer for a bit, so information about Lvl.6 is pretty accurate.

I don’t think there’ll be an eighth, but there might be a “descending the seventh layer” and a “at the bottom of the seventh” portion of the manga.

One thing to keep in mind is that we’ve still got two named white whistles other than Lyra who haven’t been accounted for. I’d be surprised if the manga ends without them turning up in some way, so at the least it looks like there’s still going to be a bit more after the 6th layer plot wraps up
