"Without lead" is a mistake. It's a tool called a shinnuki (芯抜き) for removing the center of the charcoal. It lets you get a more uniform color and texture.

I do the same thing, I have a tune that goes 'mobile, wallet, keys' and i physically touch each item. A friend was doing it and it stuck ever since
