All I remember from this is that Black Star made my blood boil. I have never - before or since - hated a character as much as I hate black star. His every scene made me uncomfortable and angry. Every line that comes out of his stupid mouth in that ridiculous voice of his. I fucking hate it. What kept me going half the time was hoping to see the fucker die. Frankly making me hate something fictional so much is an achievement in and of itself and probably the most significant thing the anime did for me.

Soul is insecure. His cool, aloof, "I don't give a damn" personality is a facade. He's actually very passionate about things - his music, his status as a weapon, his relationship with Maka, etc. However - Soul is afraid that if he ever devotes himself whole-heartedly to an objective, he'll come up short. He is scared of failing, so rather than throw himself headlong into achieving his goals, he moves along at a "controlled" pace. This is (one of many reasons) why he's prone to "stopping" the concerts he uses to conduct the flow of the black blood. By Soul's own confession, his inferiority complex is the product of Soul living in he shadow of an older brother who is a musical genius.
In short - "I'm scared of failing, so I won't try as hard as I can." This doesn't excuse his passive nature, but it does explain why he seems irrelevant when compared to Maka. Throughout the series, Maka, for all her failings, demonstrates the courage to fight fear.
Not sure if this holds true or not but - the author of Soul Eater (Atsushi Ohkubo) has a brother named Akira. Akira is now drawing most of the art for Kishimoto's new series - Samurai 8. I don't know which one is older, or which brother is more "successful", but I can't help but wonder if Atsushi looked to his own sibling relationship when he built this inferiority complex into Soul. Both are manga artists, in the same way Soul and his brother are musicians.
