I did a 4-year BA in philosophy. Never went in Hunter threads on Yea Forums because I didn't want to spoil myself on the series. A friend of mine convinced me to read it and during the Chimera arc I kept telling him how much it reminded me of Hegel's theory of consciousness. Lo and behold I come to discuss HxH on Yea Forums and there's a running consensus about Hegel being relevant to the themes. It was curious because someone other than me must have picked up on what I was seeing in it. I'm not saying the show is "on par with" Hegel's writing, just that it's strongly reminiscent of it and inspired by it and Kierkegaard, among others. Not to mention the themes of nuclear weaponry, phagogenesis, evolution, war, classism, human nature on a fundamental level, unconditional love, and more. But yeah there's a lot of philosophical nuance in the story, which is why HxH is considered one of the deepest works the medium has seen.

Yeah, the Hegel thing is certainly there. But the fuck kind of statement is HxH making about "evolution" that isn't being made by fucking Dragonball Z? What does one get out of HxH when asking what it says about nukes? How does it interweave a theme of "unconditional love" into its story that is in any way special or different from other run of the mill shounen manga?
Again, Togashi certainly can write. He knows how to keep plot threads going that seem pointless only to have them come full circle and become the most relevant and then have a conclusive and whole end. But stuff like that is cast aside when talking about HxH because people want to throw in more buzzwords about stuff that sounds intellectual and sophisticated.
People are mad at HxHfags because a group of dedicated shitposters has been shitting up a bunch of threads in their name for a few years now.
