She was then put in the back of a police car and taken to the station to make a statement. Her boyfriend was charged with aggravated battery and the Japanese man was also charged after being taken to the hospital.

Now, here are some small points about the case that people need to realize to make a fair assessment:

This is exactly what the Ancient Egyptians did. They considered it an honor and their civic duty to build infrastructure and buildings. Slaves would have been off limits something as sacred as the pyramids. Basically slaves were used around the workers camps, cooking and cleaning up the place while the workers did their crafts.

Slavery is sometimes less efficient because it's not "free". You need to buy the slaves, take care of them, feed them, provide medical care, and so on. The cost of a slave is the sum total of all of those expenses. Wage slavery is preferred now because you can pay someone less than they need to live (any instance where someone must work more than one job) and do not need to provide housing, food, or medical care while still retaining their labor during the hours you want them there and being freed of their burden during hours you do not want them there. If the sum of those expenses is less than the sum of the expenses of owning a slave, then it's better to employ someone and convince them they're better off than a slave. In the cases where the sum total of an employee is more than the costs of owning a slave (e.g. in areas where life is abundant and cheap), then owning an actual slave would be more efficient. Oddly enough I think the slave crests are used to tone down the violence involved. With an anime slave crest the master can just compel a slave to do something and if they don't they get an electric shock or however the series decides to enforce the crest. In reality if a slave didn't listen their master would beat the fucking daylights out of them. I'd prefer that as a more realistic representation in anime but I can also understand why it often doesn't get portrayed that way.
