I still don't understand the timeline really.
As far as I can understand, there was a highly advanced era where everything on earth has become artificial and nature was completely replaced by infrastructure, robots have reached a singularity just as some kind of war broke out.
Then after the war humanity regressed into 30's to cold war era technology with plane bombers and tanks and such, with the singularity robots being turning into mushrooms that are being worshiped.
How the hell did humanity manage hundreds of years living without any kind of usable natural resources?
How did they manage to build tanks and weapons post-hyperwar?
How did they build the temple?
It's way too advanced to have been built during the post-war age.
If it was build during the singularity age, why would they worship the robots if they were man-made?
Why was the roof bare even though it's the only place where natural sunlight and a night sky can be seen, wouldn't there be residences up there?

The way I think it happened is like this, in the 21st century humanity got to the point where we got big war robots, ww3 broke out, the majority of humanity got wiped out, but not all of it. I also think that not all of nature was destroyed and the whole planet wasn't covered in concrete, it's just that we never see anything outside the city in SSR. There were probably still some recourses left.
I'm also not sure all the old school tech we see in SSR was built after ww3, maybe it was leftovers from ww2 that survived for plot convenience's sake.
Basically humanity barely survives after that, and we jump forward to the 3rd millenium. The remnants of humanity go to war again and pretty much all kill eachother. Those who don't fight, like the girls for example, just try to live by scavenging, but there isn't much left.
I think the beings that were worshipped were nukos, not the robots, and I don't know how you got the idea that robots turned into the nukos. The nukos themselves are basically a mystery and not explained.
My interpratation of the roof is this: Before ww3, the city kept on expanding upwards, new floors were being build one after the other, but when ww3 happened, the construction stopped, since most people got killed. It was probably meant to have buildings and people living there etc. but because of the war it never got finished. As to why people didn't live there after ww3? There was no reason to live there since there was nothing there I guess.

I assumed that the nukos were evolved robots since nukos have the ability to converse through radiowaves and manipulate old-world technology. Nuko-1 managed to open the door to the nuclear submarine without effort while having the intelligence of a child, as if it had the door key programmed into it.
Inside the sub, the video recording of the three girls outright states that the robot prototype they were holding can replicate itself, so it's possible that some kind of evolution took place.
Judging from that I assumed that Nukos are post-WW3.
To be honest, I think that the nuko-shrooms were a bad addition to the story, the theme of slow death and decadence in the world would be more impactful without knowing that some kind of mushroom race is actively accelerating it by destroying all free energy on earth.

I hadn't considered that, you may be right. I personally saw the nukos as supernatural, basically just a storytelling tool for tkmiz to be able to convey that humanity is not coming back, that the girls really are the last two people left.
Them eating weapons and being able to operate machines was just a part of their supernatural powers to me, in a way I think it was trying to be symbolic, the nukos eating weapons was meant to show the end of human war and violence I think, tkmiz even talked about war in one of the afterwords. I think tkmiz might be a pacifist, but that's just me speculating.
Honestly I liked the nukos, the kid nuko was cute and it brought more variety to the story, rather than just have it be the two girls. The submarine scene really got me, Yuu being swallowed was so sudden, I was kind of scared the story might end there with Chii dying alone I watched the anime first, before reading the manga. I think the big nukos not explaining more was a good move from tkmiz, since the story of SSR was never about the apocalypse itself, it was about the girls, their journey and their relationship.
