The film cashed out on the "exotic Japan" obsession in the West. Mitsuha was literally the self insert for the viewer. Her excitement when she first visited Tokyo was only there to exist as a group masturbation session for weeaboos who fetishize Japan. Not to mention the garbage Miko shit and muh Musubi. It was 100% a pandering session for rich chinks and westerners to get their Japanophilic catharsis and also increase tourism for the 2020 Olympics. Bravo Abe.

I don't know if Shinkai would do that again, although he did have the sensei from Garden of Words cameo in Kimi no na Wa. I'm expecting the movie to have a small scene of them walking through the stairs/shrine from the end of KnnW as a not-so-subtle nod to the movie, since it looks like this movie is taking place in Tokyo.
