Not at all, I intemperate that part of the movie as Anno directly reaching out as to say, or rather show that Evangelion is a representation of who he is as a person. I think it's about that part in the movie were the story becomes less focused on Shinji's struggle, but more on Anno himself. I think the sort of truce that Shinji and Asuka come to at the end is more representative of Anno coming to terms with who he is and moving on into the future.

What I was trying to say in my comment is that upon my initial viewing of Evangelion, I was so invested in shinji, that I legitimately wished that alternate harem reality had been the ending of the show.

If you competed, hard, with Asuka and narrowly beat her out in a synch test, she wouldn't have a breakdown. It would push her to really give her all (Asuka can usually be seen fucking around in synch tests despite her competitive nature).
What made it so bad in the series was that it seemed like Shinji beat her effortlessly, and without even wanting to pilot. Imagine if someone took up your favourite hobby and was almost instantly better than you, despite clearly not caring about it. You'd feel like you wasted your time even trying.
