>Your wings are not white, not black, but a beautiful charcoal grey
This show filled holes in my heart that I didn't even know existed.

I couldn't finish this series it was so boring.
Try again!
I've only watched the whole thing twice (back in the mid 2000s and again in the early 2010s) but it remains one of my all time favourites.
I find the crow party to be stunningly beautiful and meaningful.
Hikari best Haibane.
Correct
I hope I can become a Haibane after death so I can violate those winged girls.
Texhnolyze > Haibane > NHK > Niea7 > Lain
Haibane > Lain > Niea_7 > Texh
NHK has nothing to do with Abe as far as I know except that he drew some covers for the LN.
Abe designed the characters just like in all the others IIRC. Only thing he wrote was Haibane
Should have covered the backstory of all of them and universe more extensively.
Wrong.
False. All ABe girls are equally best.
despera never
Phenomeno adaptation double never
He designed the girl because he was the person in charge of drawing her for the cover but a different person is listed as character designer for the show. HR is the only thing (at least of those 4 shows) that he was in charge of more by himself (though he also drew the manga for Niea_7) but I'm sure he had some input outside of character design for at least Lain if not Texh.
Explaining too many things would make it worse imo. I do wish it would get a movie, if nothing else so that there can be an anime of it that isn't blurry and 480p, but I feel like there isn't a way to do anything more with it without ruining it.
The main story with the girls in old home should be left untouched, but there’s still plenty to tell from the old factory Haibanes and the Renmei that could be potentially made into new stories.
I'm more saying I don't want the world to be any more explained really and the mystery needs to stay there. I think it would be hard to have another story about the Haibane without explaining the world any more than it already was, especially if you don't just want to rehash the story from the series. I feel like not involving the original characters would sort of take away from it for me but at the same time I also think like you that it's easy to ruin the series depending on what they do. It could take place after a long time skip or something where all of the original characters have had their days of flight or something I guess. But that would require them to be replaced by characters equally as good. I want it done but don't think it could be done well so it's kind of conflicting.
There isn’t that much mistery left to explain aside from maybe what’s on the other side of the wall, it would be really hard to fuck everything up, there can be independent stories set on the same world with original characters that don’t necessarily need to be equally as good or better that the originals, it’s just about having more content with the same mood and tone.
I love Haibane Renmei so much. From Kuu's departure to the end I'm constantly on the verge of tears, or just straight up crying. I'm not usually this emotional but HR is just so honest and beautiful that I can't help it, and the incredible soundtrack certainly plays a part in that too.
What is it about Haibane that gives it such a peaceful, ethereal yet sad feeling? I never got that particular emotion from any other anime, including the usual mono no aware series like Mushishi.
I don't think there's one specific thing that creates the feeling, it's just a combination of everything. The fleeting but meaningful lives of the Haibane, a wonderful soundtrack, the comfortable worn down look of the town and all the little unexplained mysteries just blend together to create that wonderful atmosphere.
Please say hello to my wife Reki.
Agreed, moreso than the other works of Abe, Haibane feels very cohesive. From world building to dialogue and character personalities everything works together to create this almost perfect juxtaposition between peacefulness and anxiety in its atmosphere. Haibane might not be the most philosophically complex in terms of narrative and world compared to other series Abe has worked on, but I would say it is easily the most well realized.
Nothing to taihen about
Reki's definitely the best girl but I must confess I love Rakka more, she's just so sweet. And I completely agree with you about the world, it feels so alive and "lived in" despite how little we really see of it.
I wish it had a decent BD release
There's not much they can do unfortunately. I doubt they'd go through the effort to do a full remake for a niche series like this either.
You had the right idea, it doesn't get any better and nothing in the background ever matters.
>hurr not fast paced isekai it's trash lmao
>everyone who disagrees watches the genre I hate
this show has do nothing characters, and spends so much time on world building with a mystery on what the metaphysics of that world are. For all those hints and implications, nothing ever matters, and the end goal of the series was character development to save the tall girl from dying in purgatory. Wow, so all the world building didn't matter and serves only as an aesthetic choice? What a pile of shit.
>this show has do nothing characters
Stopped reading right there, you are mentally handicapped.
You're right that the worldbuilding doesn't really matter but I don't see why that's a problem. It's not the focus of the show and honestly it would cheapen the whole thing if they straight up said "outside the wall is death" or whatever. There's plenty of other shows you can watch to get everything answered, some people love these sorts of mysteries where you can see all sorts of different interpretations from other fans and come up with your own theories.
Instead of focusing on what matters, the characters, we focus on other things and look inward on a character who knows nothing about herself. Why not spend time focusing on other characters as well?
The point of the series is primarily the world, to show what the life of Haibane is like. There is no "end goal" besides that.
Try reading the manga.
A fair point and my only real issue with HR. After a few rewatches I did notice some subtle development in the others but they could've used more. I suppose ABe didn't feel it important as the story really is all about Rakka and Reki and how they overcame their issues, so everything else was expanded on just enough to add life and atmosphere to the setting.
>story really is all about Rakka and Reki and how they overcame their issues
It isn't, the story is really all about the world; the characters, while having their own narrative, are primarily there for us to explore the world; the wall, the circle of sin, the origins of Haibane and why they are there.
Hmm, I saw it as the opposite. To me the story was all about exploring issues like depression and loss with a spiritual theme created by the setting. The fact that we saw it so differently is neat though, you might be right as I only saw the show a few months ago and am still coming up with new questions and answers about it in my head all the time.
Black and white is beautiful. Grey is boring and ugly.
you will not become a haibane
It's not fair, I want to go to Glie when I die.
visible breasts
True.
Ryushika is most best.
Midori is seriously underrated.
She is pretty good.
Ryushika is bizarre and amazing. I really ought to get around to reading the whole thing.
Me too. It reminds me of Yotsuba.
maybe not in the show, but I think I would receive the world building better now if it was made into an art book or something.
ABe had several Haibane artbooks, plus the art in Gaisokyu. Pic related is the cover for one of them.
I want to be stuck in a peaceful purgatory with a qt 3.14 Haibane girlfriend.
we'll be on our way in a few years.. but the happiness there will make up for my current life..
Too bad it wasn't capable of filling the holes in its story.
I hope you find happiness in this life too, user.
Check out the Scenario Collections, they've got all sorts of sketches of the world and characters. The first few volumes are quite easy to find but I'm struggling to find the later ones.
The Lifestyle Diary is also quite good.
Yeah that book's great, BakaRakka is super cute.
