Never said this, but I'll entertain the prompt anyway and say that pre-apocalypse they would help fill the void in each other's hearts and heal each other if they got over themselves and had a genuine heart-to-heart for once, and post-apocalypse this is amplified for obvious reasons.

That's up to interpretation. They CAN, that doesn't mean they will. Realistically, there will be some stragglers that return to the Earth that will number so few it's highly unlikely you ever meet one in your lifetime. There was already a presumably notable time gap in between Shinji returning and Asuka.

My guess is that when Shinji saw Asuka return, the events of the original script occur where Asuka defiantly kicks down the grave post - Shinji is excited to see proof of another returning, and the 2 decide to set-aside and postpone discussion of resolving how fucked up things got between them until the others are back and they have a semblance of normalcy.
So they wait, and wait, and it dawns on them that its still just them there and the others are not coming back - at least not any time soon.
That realization is what puts them into the "thousand-yard stare" mode they are both in at the end.
