It doesn't bother me with Kazuki and Haruka because Haruka is a child and the circumstances of their conflict don't demand that Haruka be "partly at fault" or whatever. Sometimes relationship problems can be one-sided like that.
With Reo and Mabu though, I feel like Mabu isn't supposed to be a saintly sacrificial being that's shouldering the burden of Reo's failures alone. I want the show to acknowledge the arguably selfish decisions that Mabu has made and Mabu's own failures that have hurt Reo. Rather than Mabu helplessly going along with what the otters and Reo force him to do, I want (and expect) it to be the case that Mabu willingly accepts the evils he and Reo do, because even if he and Reo are working under duress, he's willing to trade the lives of their victims for his oppurtunity to connect with Reo again. Mabu should be like Chikai, willing to do the wrong thing to protect what's important to himself and his own.

Summary of the spoilers so people stop asking (these are probably out of order, tried grouping them by topic/event):

- Reo eats the ningyouyaki Mabu makes him but tells him they're undercooked (but he seems to have no trouble eating it, maybe he's lying)
- Toi and Kazuki turn out to be childhood friends. Kazuki's anklet was a gift from Toi. They used to play soccer together.
- Enta meets Chikai, at some point they're cornered by a gang member who's after Chikai. Chikai pushes Enta at him to escape. Enta also runs away and hides, and witnesses Reo shoot the man in the head with the extraction gun (but it's set to "shoot" not extract or sleep). Real police offers show up after and confirm that the man is dead. Reo and Mabu use otter symbol chips (I'm guessing like the A mark one Keppi used on Enta in the first episode) to mind control the officers.
- Enta returns the plates and has a confrontation with Kazuki. Kazuki declares their friendship canceled, saying it's Enta's fault Toi left, and punches Enta. Enta can't bring himself to punch Kazuki back. Reo and Mabu show up and Reo shoots Kazuki to take the plates (reports seem conflicted about whether the gun showed the "shoot" thing or not this time). Enta pushes Kazuki out of the way just in time, but he gets hit instead. Kazuki asks Enta why he saved him and Enta tells Kazuki to be honest, he hates him doesn't he. Reo taunts them, Mabu stops him and tells Kazuki there's a way to save Enta as they leave
- Sara and Keppi watch some film of Reo and Mabu. Keppi makes a comment like "they're still alive" suggesting he knows them. Sara apparently has no particular reaction. They're preparing some kind of freezing machine as an anti-otter countermeasure, but Sara puts too much pepper on her ramen, sneezes and accidentally freezes Keppi.
- The final scene is Toi getting a call from Kazuki while he's on the boat to leave with his brother. It's unclear whether he picks up.

Enta has definitely made Toi mad, but Toi has still chosen to show him more kindness, forgiveness and understanding despite the shit he pulls.

Kazuki doesn’t treat him all that well to start with, and once he steps out of line Kazuki completely trashes him. He’s not a good friend to him and hasn’t been in a while, and winning him would be no prize for Enta.

my very long shot theory is that it’s a “cycle” with Enta ->Kazuki ->Toi, mayyyybe swinging back over to Enta. I think Kazuki might have feelings for him, he seems way more into him, whereas Toi doesn’t seem as into Kazuki beyond a normal friendship. I suppose it remains to be seen with the flash back of their childhood.

I actually think that's the case as well. Between the dynamics, I see Enta coming to appreciate Toi as most possible. Toi on the other hand, has always been very lenient with Enta and understanding towards him.

I agree with the current love triangle concept. Feels like that might very well be what's going on here.

I've even considered Enta/Toi/Kazuki endgame possible, just because it is Ikuhara. That's pretty longshot though and I don't know at this point if I could even happily resolve Kazuki's attitude towards Enta.

I literally don’t see why it can’t be a 3P endgame. Ikuhara doesn’t follow conventional rules and he doesn’t always stick to his own “tropes” so trying to compare it to YKA, MP etc is just pointless. Using stuff like color theory to insist one ship is being hinted at is too cringe. Red/blue? Ok? Well blue + yellow = green, which happens to be the color of Enta’s eyes, and Enta is the only one whose eye and hair color doesn’t match.

Obviously that means nothing, and trying to guess how an Ikuhara series is going to go is pretty futile.

I was referring to the line when the otter grabs Mabu by the neck. In the CR translation, the otter says,

It's interesting that some of the Asenshi translation is more literal, and other parts are more liberal.

I think "doll" works better, what with all the connections with ningoyaki.

I find the first line more unnerving, it's the split and pause into the second line that makes it hit harder for me. Besides doll works better.

I didn't claim that the Asenshi line is better, just that I thought it sounded more menacing to me. "Puppet" has more dangerous connotations, but it doesn't fit the ningyoyaki wordplay. At this point, it's not clear if Mabu even is a "puppet" for the otters too, so that translation might bite Asenshi in the ass.

Perfect TL in my opinion would be Asenshi's word order but doll instead of puppet.

I think all of the possible 'ships' are being hinted at, it's just dramatically complex and where it'll end is uncertain.

I think 3P endgame is interesting because of the series' focus and insistence of importance on the connection of the three. It's just unprecedented and there's a lot of to resolve. That said, Sarazanmai has been fairly efficient about its drama so I like to think there's a chance

Mawaru Penguindrum also ended up prioritizing family relationships over couples despite what the sacrifice scene looked like. In the end Himari loved both of her brothers equally despite Kanba loving her and her loving and having Shoma as her fated person.

Sexual/romantic relationships have been a pretty big component of Sarazanmai but you’re right, it could definitely end platonically. I’d be quite happy with no endgame and just sweet friendship.

I agree, but at the same time Mawaru in general was very focused on familial love from the start and throughout whereas Sarazanmai's main theme is desire. We do have reomabu for that too - romantic desire/love, so I suppose it can still be present, it just feels like more heavily focused on romantic relationships.

I certainly don't mind a friendship end especially if its done well, romantic examinations of this kind are just rarer so I'd like to get more of that.

Enta’s romantic feelings have been mentioned at length in interviews and other meta materials, so I feel pretty optimistic about a proper and satisfying resolution. I feel like Ikuhara is very deliberate and doesn’t “bait” so to speak.

Why does Toi care more about Enta than Kazuki?

Toi seems to be able to relate to Enta better. I think it's because he's sympathetic to Enta's feelings towards Kazuki, and has some resentment for the way Kazuki treats Enta. There is a point early on where Toi basically asks how Enta can let Kazuki act like that, or talks about Kazuki being clueless towards Enta.

When thinking about the scene where Enta's secret is revealed, and Kazuki doesn't have much of a reaction, I think that's where Toi's sympathy stems from. Partially because his brother puts him at a distance as well. On the other hand, Kazuki lives with his little brother and his little brother loves him. It's Kazuki who needs to figure out his own emotional issues to reciprocate that.

Toi sees and acknowledges how Enta is treated by Kazuki and it almost seems like he’s extending the concern toward him to make up for the lack of effort on Kazuki’s part. Could be that he can relate because of his issues with Chikai. Could be that he’s an unexpectedly compassionate person. Could be both.
