They kind of upgraded him past the point of protagonist by the end of the movie though.
As someone who has seen plenty recap movies since more than ten years ago...I thought they did a reasonable job. Geass isn't easy to summarize, but it mostly works. Movie 1 was pretty good and Movie 3 at least kept the most important stuff. It's movie 2 where you could argue they could have made some different decisions in one direction or another.
