It's not a harem, it's barely ecchi (and it's not like Slayers is free of fanservice c'mon), and the isekai part stops mattering after the first episode like 99% of isekai and it just becomes a normal fantasy setting. I mean that it's a parody of JRPG type fantasy stories, featuring a cast of goofy characters setting off on advetures that are filled with more comical antics than epic heroics, but which still end up being fun, well constructed adventures non-the-less.

Slayers and NEXT roughly adapted the first eight light novels, with some things ostensibly out-of-order, omitted, or changed. Try was its own original story. However, because there was a large amount of content skipped in the first eight, Revo / Evo-R adapted large chunks of things from volumes 4 and 5, namely the assassin Zuuma and the creation of Zanaffar armor using a schematic from the Claire Bible.
With how much things have changed, you'll find that the light novels and the anime offer different rides.

The first series is extremely 90s, but that doesn't prevent it from being enjoyable. NEXT is regarded as the best season for the anime, and with very good reason. It arguably has better drama and a better climax compared to the light novels, which it adapts from, and has one of the best OP songs in anime history. Try was its own original story, and it gets very dark and very serious for what should be a comedy show. While it follows through on some romantic stuff seen in NEXT, it's lower than the second season in fan rankings because there is a horrendous filler break in the middle of intense action.
Revolution / Evolution-R aren't necessarily bad, but they certainly aren't good. When the mascot animal isn't involved, it feels like a healthy continuation for the series in the anime line, and even the digital art stays rather faithful to their old designs. The problem is that the mascot animal is central to the core story, and the two seasons themselves are adapting stories from the light novel that take place long before the "Hellmaster" arc, which had been completely resolved in the anime for years.
All in all, give it a shot, and if it's not your thing, try the movies and OVAs.

Light novels are "core", and includes the original work and the comedic spin-off Slayers Special / Smash, which chronicle Lina's adventures prior to the main series with one of the best side-kicks ever created. This is what you want to go to for Hajime Kanzaka's original ideas. The problem is that only Volumes 1-8 of a total of 16 have been translated by TokyoPop (of all companies) because they didn't believe the light novels were selling well enough.
The anime roughly adapts from the light novels, and is the easiest to get into simply because Funimation has all of the subbed episodes available on YouTube. The anime has to include filler and other cast members, but it largely does so very well. Fans generally prefer the anime because there's more-overt shipping, and I personally believe the drama and climax for NEXT blows volumes 5-8 out of the water. Try is its own story, and Revo / Evo-R goes back to (poorly) adapting the light novels. Also in animation are movies and OVAs, which are largely stand-alone and all, except Premium, take place before the Slayers anime really begins because it features Naga, whose ojou-laugh is peerless, even in the English dub.
The manga is largely adapted from the light novels and the movies / OVAs, but also has two original stories, Knight of the Aqualord and Hourglass of Falces. KotA was originally supposed to be a video game, and you can tell with the introduced primary character in that story, but there's never a point where it can be called "bad". The Hourglass of Falces, meanwhile, deviates from Rui Araizumi's artwork and is blatant ecchi, so if that's your thing then go for it. I believe both of these works are available in English... but if they aren't, you can find them fan translated on most manga-reading sites.
As for what's better, that's up to you. Do you like worldbuilding and heavy-detail? Do you like shipping and slapstick comedy? Do you like TITS and ASS? There's an option for everyone with Slayers.

To be fair, they can't really show it, because there's no one within the crew's team that is just as powerful as Xellos. For example, Reisaat and Rashart together could handle Xellos, but they both wanted to kill Lina while she was looking for the Claire Bible, meaning that if Lina was sticking around while Xellos fought them, they would always target her and render a full-blown fight between the three of them pointless.
However, word of God says that Luna, as a Knight of Ceipheed, is about the same in terms of power as Xellos, who is both a Priest and General...

While there is no official reason as far as I am aware, outside of it being a funny gag it makes sense why Luna would be staying in Zephalia for two reasons. The first is that Luna has no need to intervene because the Mazoku are far more interested in Lina's ability to use "Chaos" magic, or magic that calls upon directly the Lord of Nightmares. If Lina kills herself in the process, who cares? Certainly not her elder sister who has tried to kill her in the past, both with beatings and with poison. (Yes, that's canon. To be fair, though, Lina would make village boys pay money to use a special projector to show Luna bathing; she's no saint.)
The second is that Zephalia has the Eternal Queen, a living aspect of the Aqualord Ragradia, who is one-fourth of Ceipheed, the God that fought against Ruby Eye Shabranigdo. Ragradia fought against a fragment of Shabranigdo that had been released by (someone who in fanon is a Wiseman like Rezo) Lei Magnus, as well as Chaos Dragon Garv. Ragradia died, passing on his wisdom in the form of the Claire Bible, and fragments of that immense knowledge are believed to be part of the Eternal Queen's as well.
Since Xellos is on a mission to destroy every copy of the Claire Bible, she would need to protected.

Luna is no-nonsense. If they were to meet, which Hajime is understandably reluctant to do because her strength is so far beyond anyone else's in the main cast, it wouldn't, or rather shouldn't, be played for gags. Xellos could kill Filia in the blink of an eye, since he'd killed thousands of golden dragons in the War of Monster's Fall, which made it funny when he would harass her and she would retaliate.
Luna is the only person we know of outside of one of the subordinates of Shabranigdo, like Garv or Hellmaster, that could legitimately destroy him. Comedy ends when a threat to a major villain's life is put on the table.

The new stuff is Series 3 for the light novels, so yes. Series 1 is volumes 1-8, Series 2 is volumes 9-15, and 16 is sort of an anniversary bridge, and will probably be included in Series 3. The issue is that nothing after volume 9 has been translated into English, meaning you and I getting volumes 16+ will be tricky; 16 still hasn't been translated, and it was released last year in October.

As far as it can be understood from the light novels, after Garv's betrayal and destruction, with Hellmaster and Dynast following shortly thereafter, there's only Deep Sea Dolphin and Zelas Metallium, Xellos' retainer, left.
Considering that every other priest and general has been killed in one continuity or another (Riksfalto and Hurakei being destroyed in the manga), Xellos is the only one left, and has shown he's willing to work for other subordinates like when he worked for Hellmaster. He's basically the only tool Dolphin and Zelas have.

As far as it can be understood, she doesn't have an opinion on the gods or the Mazoku. She IS, as every world is made up of her. She is unstoppable, insurmountable, and undefeatable. Her name alone is enough to demoralize Mazoku, like what we've seen when Lina mentions her around Xellos.
Her objective appears to be the same as the Mazoku; to drown the world and make it become part of the Sea of Chaos again. Hajime has joked that she wants this done because she's "lonely", but her real reasons aren't clear. Not even the Claire Bible can tell us what her goal is. However, her reason for assaulting Phibrizzo in NEXT is because he attempted to elevate himself above LoD by assuming what her desires are.
There were only two options known to using the Giga Slave at that time. Either is fires off correctly, or it fails and the world it was used on falls into the Sea of Chaos. LoD chose a third option when Lina used it for Hellmaster, and that was to use Lina as an avatar. WHY she did that, we don't know, nor do we know why she gave Lina's body back when Gourry started punching his way through Chaos to get her.

To make it more clear, when she appears she tells Phibrizzo that "only my thoughts exist here", when a better understanding of her statement would be "everything that exists is a part of me". Phibrizzo, wishing for destruction, presumed that if he assaulted LoD and killed her vessel, Lina, it would take out the entire world, which is a part of LoD, would be destroyed as well.

Absolutely. The Sword of Light, despite being a weapon, is a subordinate of Dugradigdo, like how Garv and Metallium are subordinates of Shabranigdo. In other words, it's a Mazoku, so it could handle fighting most other Mazoku quite well.
The Blast Sword, however, was probably the weapon used by Ceipheed, this world's god, and because of its "holy" qualities it's dramatically more powerful than the Sword of Light from what we've seen. While there can be an argument that the SoL wasn't properly tapped in to because no one knew what it really was until it was taken away, given the universe's power-level chart, the Blast Sword would still be stronger than SoL at its full potential.

Considering its origins, no one really knew to be fair, and especially not Gourry. He never had the weapon properly explained to him. He has a rather sad backstory where, while his family passes down the Sword of Light by generation, siblings regularly fought with each other over who would get it. It was either Hajime or Rui who, in an interview, stated that Gourry has an older sibling(s?) that basically have a "Hokuto no Ken" relationship where they fought over who would get to possess the Sword.
To end the conflict because he has such a kind heart, he stole it as a young teen and ran away from home.

I dunno. Maybe you didn't like how everything was moving at a relatively slow pace because the plot hadn't kicked in yet? Maybe you were mad that the show was clearly going to wind-up jumping the shark before even reaching the halfway point? Maybe you didn't like the shitty VAs that were cast for Rezo and Zel, and Gourry sounding like Brock? Maybe you don't like how the old animation looks?

It's a perfect little storm.
It's regarded as a bit of a cult classic series, for a given value of "classic", and it's actually a really cute story.
It's been OOP for about 10 years, and isn't likely seeing a new run anytime soon.
And online scans only reach so far, and I don't think anyone's finished the series. Even the translation leaves out about six volumes.
