Most of the Squadron Leaders aren’t super impressive, I imagine they can beat most of them. Chrollo surely has some ability. Hisoka might actually have trouble, despite his superior Enhancement to Chrollo, someone like Zazan could pose a lot of trouble in her powered up form. We only saw like two of Leol’s abilities, but fighting him in the same situation as Morel could be difficult.

Yes it gets better just stick with it. The exam arc and the following killua's family arc (or whatever the fuck that one is called) are considered weak compared to the rest of the show. Personally I really enjoyed the exam arc though so I don't know why it always gets shat on. The following mini arc set at killua's house is complete aids though, but luckily it is short and the following arc starts to rocket the quality of the show

WRT to the exam arc, having experienced the rest of the series, the exam arc tosses you into a heavily structured artificial environment without giving you a clear picture of the world as a whole or any practical idea of what hunters are or what they do. I know Gon wants to be one, they are given preferential treatment over normal people, are strong and do a variety of jobs but I don't really know what their function is in the world, like why ARE there hunters.
I'm totally ready and willing to believe it gets better from here but I'm about 20 episodes in and the lack of context is a little frustrating and makes it hard to be invested at this point.
