How's that project coming along Yea Forums?
Scanlation Thread
Everything I work on is going well.
Where can I post my junk to get more clicks?
...
IT'S
FUCKING
DEAD
bump
It got sniped.
not going well at all, still what? 600+ chapters to do? and i think i'm getting burned out...
Have you ever tried to extrapolate how long it would take to finish all of them at your current pace?
lmao just one up them
give me an untranslated shounen to work on
Rakugaki Fighter
I'm thinking of picking up a new series now that I got caught up with my current project. I want something that's started recently and only has a few chapters to it. I prefer series with under 20 page chapters, so I have some looking to do.
No matter how much I liked a series I don't think I'd ever be able to pick up anything that was that far behind. Are the chapters at least short?
I cannot find raws
I bought it 15 years ago at my local bookstore.
To continue from last time and answer your question, yes.
Here's what it looks like when I let my script that doesn't use canvases get it. Not much of a difference from yours.
Yours is more noisy. Why are you saving it as a JPEG?
Cause the source is a noisy jpg. Here it is saving it as a png. I am doing no post processing to the image or anything it is as it comes.
And it's suddenly a bit less noisy.
What are you smoking? Overlaying the both in photoshop with one on difference is giving me a huge black page there is literally no difference. Your browser must be doing post-processing.
literally no difference
stop being pretentious about superficial image quality shit.
There's definitely a difference, you just can't tell by looking at the black page.
You're descrambling the picture in your script, right? That's usually gonna encode differently if you save it as .jpg again, so you're compressing twice.
I'm not comparing them on the browser and there is a slight difference which is visible by actually overlaying it.
Why don't you guys just use the unscrambled version frem jump+/pocket instead?
If a group is looking for TL, I'll do anything that's not shonen.
Alright, making the levels ridiculous or going over the page with the color picker shows where it flicks from 0 to 1 occasionally. It is nothing that the eye can or will pick up though. It's an easy switch to png anyways but it's good to know nonetheless.
used to clean, proofread & typeset for a group started by only 1 russian dude who was the only member because his cleans and typesetting were awful and i felt bad like his work was going to waste. sent him a PM to ask if i could help out and we started talking. guy was a bit looney to me, didn't enjoy music, only the soviet national anthem, and only read english books and weird english webcomics all the time. he steadily offered me translated manga scripts and raws to clean for a couple of years and i felt like i was getting pretty good at it, then one day he just disappeared and the group went inactive. i found out years later by emailing him to catch up that he had moved to japan to get a job for a major company as a translator and is now married to a nip wife and is living the dream. meanwhile nothing in my life has changed at all and the situation made me wish i'd spent more effort on evolving my skills into a career like he had instead of just using it for soulseeking and hobbies.
I'm missing a fucking reference here, aren't I? Pls help I don't know what Duwa means
Chijou Saikyou no Otoko Ryu
Have you tried googling it? I'm getting plenty of song lyrics.
Looks like "douwa" to me
It's a small u.
I'm in a fear mood, what horror manga never got a tranlation?
Yes, still found nothing that looks like it could fit the context.
No denying there's a correlational between these threads dying off and sad panda being moved to /h/...
We need a manga boad.
there is no real way to recreate that lower right bubble except for drawing the text by hand, is there?
It just sounds like an exaggerated da.
You're probably right because she keeps repeating this shit. Thank you, user.
Yeah, I'd say that's definitely a character specific speech quirk or a dialect then.
like, 6 to 7 years if not more
They're normal weekly chapters but they're hell to work with
if it's popular you could probably find some people to lighten your workload pretty easily
and there's no point scanlating shit that's not popular. unless you're a masochist.
When is a series popular?
at least 5k mangadex epeen / chapter
When it has at least several thousand views per chapter.
Wow. That means the series I'm doing is a bit popular.
Is there any way to increase the audience? Does being on social media help?
When you get a brick through your window if the chapter is late.
No.
the manga itself has to be interesting or highly demanded like generic romcom or isekai.
scanlation quality / scanlation group brand name doesn't mean shit.
even big groups like MS and Jewmini have some series that have shitty amount of views.
Are manga readers this nuts? Any good exmaples?
Eh. Plenty of stuff that's reasonably popular ends up going untranslated because no one actually steps up to translate it. A series could easily get 5k-10k people reading it just from posting it on Mangadex and linking it on reddit, and still have it go untranslated for years simply because the translator or even the typesetter lost interest or didn't have the free time, and no one had the interest or initiative to replace them.
The fuck are you trying to say? That's a completely different topic.
True. My chapters get 5-6k views on average, but my group profile only has around 100 views.
I only have 2 group follows and only one of the readers sent me a personal thank you for picking up the series. Then he sent me a friend request.
If I retire I'll put out an announcement and try to get someone to adopt my series.
Is it a good or bad idea to accept friend requests from readers?
That saying 'there's no point in scanlating shit that's not popular is dumb' as it's hard to gauge popularity without scanlating it, and even then it won't necessarily be getting views where you're looking. A series could get crap for views on Mangadex, and be super popular on Kissmanga for example.
It's also a pretty self defeating view. Scanlate shit you like and want to share with other people. It shouldn't matter if it's 2,000 or 20,000 unless you're trying to make money off of it.
What? It's the opposite for me, I don't see why I'd scanlate something popular when I could just sit there and let someone else inevitably do it instead.
merakiscans allegedly got death threats for delaying senryuu shoujo while pumping out shitty korean isekais instead. Serves them right, I'm glad anons took over
I have noticed for the series I do that it gets way more views on manganelo.
But yeah, I have to like a series if I'm going to bother to translate it.
doesn't really matter as long as you're willing to ignore them if they end up being insufferable faggots. Remember that the community is filled with spergs and that that becomes a lot less tolerable once you leave the confines of anonymity
You want to share your scanlation with many people, not miniscule to make it worth the effort.
I wonder if anyone's ever got death threats for dropping a series.
I want to have some people to talk to about the manga I like. A couple hundred active readers are often enough for that
Nobody ever says or discusses anything about unpopular sub-1000 views manga.
>Serves them right, I'm glad anons took over
Now if only the PR stopped being a lazy shit and actually did his fucking job.
>PR
useless time wasting meme role
>>It shouldn't matter if it's 2,000 or 20,000 unless you're trying to make money off of it.
>making money off of scanlations
But that would be unethical. You do not own any part of the manga, you essentially just stole and edited someone else's hard work and put your own shitty watermark on it
Indeed, doesn't help he's delaying the entire project.
so the manga that makes redrawers scream in terror is held back by someone who's skill and task is to be a reasonably fluent native english speaker? Funny
not as unnecessary as QC though.
Proofreading is very important. It's just straight up embarrassing when you make a typo somewhere (can happen easily) and you don't notice it. Then your work gets published on a dozen manga websites... even if you try to take back your work to revise it later on, chances are that half of the websites won't care to update the chapters
>embarrassing
literally nobody cares besides some autistic perfectionist typesetters.
>half of the websites won't care to update the chapters
Do any? You upload to mangadex and the crawlers automatically spread it around. I don't think any of the slave sites updates the shit if you change the mangadex chapter.
Last I looked most sites still had the Dark Knight version of art club.
I saw a translation where a guy consistently used "should of" instead of "should have", among other mistakes. That guy desperately needed a proof reader
Why would you ever have a literal goblin of a typesetter who ignores typos? QC and PR are meme tasks that don't need separate people to handle.
>even if you try to take back your work to revise it later on, chances are that half of the websites won't care to update the chapters
>Caring about what scraper sites or their malware-ridden users think
non-issue.
people autp-fix grammtical and typo for themself as they red the texts.
It's only annoying when they have repeated tense/case errors.
Depending on the English ability of the translator and the complexity of the source, PR/QC can get saddled with some real bullshit. I can easily see a translator doing the poems literally and leaving it to PR to make the syllables work.
Right, I may have judged to quickly. Translating poems is a nightmare
I wish mangaka would stop doing those "emotion/atmosphere" effects, like "menacing" and shit like that.
Show, don't tell. Show that the guy is menacing or that the situation is suspensful. Doing a little sfx for this is so lazy.
one of like a million delinquent manga, see bottom
I think Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou is one that japs reference all the time and is really influential, yet has never seen the light of day beyond the first four chapters according to this
HnG is working on otoko ippiki gaki daishou right now, translations just picked up again recently after being stalled for a while. It sucks ass, though.
the comic, or the scanlation? because it seems pretty par for the course on both ends for old comics.
The scans are very good, the comic just...isn't, even relative to other ones of the era
was i thinking of a different one then? i can barely even remember the reference i'm thinking of, it may have been in bakemonogatari
What would you do about a translator who doesn't really reply to your messages at all Yea Forums?
that's me
How many views for a single chapter within 6 hours on Mangadex would you consider popular Yea Forums?
>artist for scanlation project you're on posts about the project and draws something to congratulate us finishing
Feels good
1. Message them again
2. Message them through a different means
3. Wait a month
4. Find a new translator
I'd say 5k, but I would say it ultimately doesn't matter as long as you like the stuff you work on. If you work on stuff just because it's popular, but you don't like it, you'll feel miserable and it'll show in your work.
The thing is that he's clearly there since he's reading the messages and it's showing that he's been online multiple times. He just doesn't reply.
Have you ever had arguments with your scanlation group Yea Forums?
Typesetting is the least important role, they're a dime a dozen and easily replaceable
>go on about how you do the work because you enjoy it and want more people to know and talk about it
>shit on the people who read it just because it's on a shitty site
I don't get why scanlators do this.
like every day
but you mean ones about the series?
like every week
ゴゴゴゴ
I mean arguments where one or more of you actually get unironically mad, not just bantz.
oh
like every month
at the start it was five times a chapter
your staff's backgrounds are important
When you like it
that's what you get for teaming up with BRs and seaniggers
BRs and seaniggers are good, they get to english translations through here
you gotta watch out for the people who aren't used to opinions
>not translating the sfx
>you gotta watch out for the people who aren't used to opinions
that's what you get for teaming up with redditors
seriously
don't do this
no matter how hard it is to find TLs
>when you rather work with brs and seaniggers over reddit
The role of typesetter is important because it's necessary to release a product. Typesetters, not so much. It's the only position where all of the necessary skills can be learned to an acceptable degree within a week just by giving even the tiniest shit about doing a good job. You can release without QC, but they're not easy to replace.
Expressing anger towards your coworkers is unproductive. I barely even talk to my team outside of work stuff and the occasional comment about the new chapter. I pretty much only work with Yea Forumsnons who are in it because they love the series, though.
Commenters basically never have anything interesting to say, and especially not when they're too complacent and stupid to switch from Kissmanga. They deserve to be shit on for the same reason that people who wear shoes on their hands deserve to be shit on.
anyone want to translate my favorite series? i'll clean, typeset, and even edit if english isn't your first language.
I don't understand what do you argue about?
what is with that image quality
How hard is it for a translator who is not willing to typeset to find someone that would typeset for him, compared to vice versa?
i got it off a raw site. the readers can't tell the difference so i figure neither should i.
Grammar, which results in perceived attacks on character, due to general personal misunderstandings derived from the difference in culture.
It's a sad 1000px and it has a chinese watermark. I don't think that combination will go unnoticed. Take this slightly better res version: files.catbox.moe
that's hot. where are you getting your raws from?
Every series I've worked on has started with a translator and acquired a typesetter, if he wanted one. The only times I've gotten a translator to join a project was when I was already working with them on their pet project. That said, translators are surprisingly numerous. Just not as numerous as the number of potential projects they can choose from.
Myself. I'm still lurking for a reply from an user of last thread that got archived
I work alone since it's easier in alot of ways, but I wish I could find someone with artistic talent, since I'm hopeless when it comes to redrawing.
>alot
You might consider a proofreader as well.
In my case the commenters on kissmanga tend to do more predictions and have good comments about the manga's comedic scenes. I like them, I just hate how the site they use won't post updated versions of chapters.
>since I'm hopeless when it comes to redrawing.
Just clone everything bro lol
>being this autistic about minor grammar issues like this
If you mean replacing them with English graphics then that's very time consuming work. At most I just subtitle them. In a series with alot of sound effects, like an action series, I could see why they'd get sick to having to translate every little sound that occurs.
>coworkers act enthusiastic and proactive
>be forced to pretend to be social and talkative
Shit sucks man
Translator here. I like doing typesetting myself, since if my intended translation doesn't fit the bubble well I have to rephrase it to still sound good.
How do you guys share the translations between translator and typesetter? Just a text file, or something else?
This usually works very poorly on anything with screentones that I've tried.
rate this scanlation
10/10 has a cute loli
Oh, the horror!
I might subtitle some text that's over images, but I would try to match the font used and not use colored text.
>the typesetter doesn't matter
It feels nice when a series you picked up recently keeps gaining followers.
remarkable self-confidence booster/10
>he uses wild words in his scanlation
Gross
Wild!
ITT talk shit about someone that you work with in your group
How would you translate "itadakimasu" Yea Forums?
"Itadakimasu". Our audience isn't the mass market. If someone can't understand it do you really want them even reading the series?
>If someone can't understand it do you really want them even reading the series?
Sorta yes, since you want as many people reading the shit you like as possible. What's the point of doing it if next to no one reads your scanlation?
the same way you translate bon appétit
so you can flex on those normies with your weeb knowledge
Rub a dub dub thanks for the grub? Localization is important after all.
He can just include a translation note for it. I do this for any japanese words I leave in my translations.
He's very autistic
But if you audience is American the localization should be "It's about damn time. I was starving."
>translate itadakimasu to bon appetit
Should I give the foreign characters in the manga I'm translating accents. Like if a character is French have them say things like magnifique and ooh la la.
it physically hurts me just hearing you ask that
Dig in!
I want people to read my scanlation. I don't want philistines reading my scanlation.
>characters made arbitrarily british or american
Should I give kansai characters a southern dialect?
ay caramba burrito taco muy bien my gringo
I advise against this. Any series I've seen that's done this has gotten numerous complaints.
Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
It's common depending on the complexity of the narrative for people to be confused. For example, if your series is historical then people who don't understand the history behind the conflict won't understand the relationships between the characters.
Give them an australian accent instead
They won't understand the relationships between the characters saying "Itadakimasu"? I answered the question for a very specific circumstance and you're trying to generalize it when that wasn't the question at all.
>translating お母さん to mum instead of mom
Why do """people""" do this?
this manga is full of normal dialogue so the reader can appreciate how cute the girls are
>including a TN note for something as common as "itadakimasu"
Are you going to leave a note for shit like "bento" and "onee-chan" as well?
the rest of Jinmen
before you do any sort of shitty accent attempt, i want you to turn off your hentai filter and read this shitty made-up scanlation that the mods have ignored.
please thoroughly understand how painful it is to read accents in manga.
>doing a currently publishing manga
>picking up another upcoming manga that starts publishing next month
>they publish on the same day
Fuck, this is going to mess with the schedule.
Kunimitsu no Matsuri. Delinquent turned politician. I've been waiting for years.
Because they're British?
At least point out the chapter and page you nigger
How fast can you typeset a 20 page chapter Yea Forums?
the entirety of chapter 12.
every chapter pulls the same kind of shit, it's not hard to see the cringy translation.
>grab 'em by the pussy
I'm pretty sure that's a meme translation user
>see chapter
>look at comments
>they actually like it
>cherrypicking the worst possible accent attempt
>and an obvious troll one at that
Redrawer here.
You need to identify where the pattern repeats and clone off that. It takes practice, but you'll get it down in a week or two.
But if you ever have to deal with gradient screentones, be ready to kill yourself.
It'll never look correct and your best choice is center your mistakes
run the healing brush on it
and then ask the typesetter to hide your terrible mistakes.
Though you could just not redraw lol. Well unless you care about the series you work on. Which goes to explain why no isekai manga has redrawers working on them(lol)
That doesn't make it look any less like shit. There are translations out there that read (and most likely are) ESL garbage with problems on every other page.
read like*
fuck
>doesn't translate the sfx
It's shit
Speaking of which, Senryuu's running out of redrawers again.
>photoshop logo
>tfw I use gimp
Just cover the bad spots with large text lol
Bachi Bachi
>people auto-fix grammatical and typographical errors for themselves as they read texts
like fucking hell I do
That's how you get the senryu redrawers to kill themselves in 4 chapters!
What's the best way to leave a group
Go on a trip to Venezuela and throw away any internet-enabled device that you have
>translating the sfx
Redrawn SFX looks and always will look like shit. I seriously hope you don't do this.
>projecting this hard
>joining a scanlation group
Why would someone subject themselves to this?
What are the downsides?
Just tell them something came up in real life and that you don't have time any more.
- It can take up alot of time.
- It can be tedious work.
- Your group members might suck.
- Sometimes your series doesn't catch on, so it's unpopular and no one reads it.
- Your readers might be annoying.
- Someone else might snipe your project.
> It can take up alot of time.
> It can be tedious work.
Exactly why you'd want to work in a group.
> Sometimes your series doesn't catch on, so it's unpopular and no one reads it.
> Your readers might be annoying.
> Someone else might snipe your project.
I don't see why this is exclusive to group scans
> Your group members might suck.
Yeah.
Is it safe to login on mangadex right now?
He's burnt out. Wait for him to come back or get a different translator.
Ironically, you'll be faster working by yourself
Doesn't it get lonely to work alone?
I'm on Yea Forums, I don't mind the solitude.
Is that so.. well, it's not like I'm in a named group myself, but it's always nice to have someone keeping tabs on you. Keeps you on your toes.
