GS is fun, but the lack of an overarching plot is fizzling out my interest. Goblin slayer is a great idea for a short story, but it’s difficult in my mind to make this work for 10+ volumes. I’ll keep reading, but I’m hoping the next volume switches something up.

The overarching plot is basically "Demon King returns!", but Haruhi is a side character in spite of being the "hero". Goblin Slayer "accidentally" discovers evidence and foils plots while purging the foot soldiers of the demon army. It's one of those trope inversion things, if that's not your thing and you're not into waifus I guess it wouldn't be very fun to read. It's pretty much a "villain of the week" kind of series.

You're right on that, but it's completely on you if you missed the first volume/end of the goblin lord arc literally spelling to you that he will never achieve anything of real importance, and his main interest is being fantasy pest-control and nothing else, so that's that what you're getting.
I read Gobbo Slayer to see creative goblin slaying, similar to the experience of playing a roguelike/dungeoncrawler session. Thus for me the lowpoints are the flimsy attempts at romance, which I hope everyone here agrees is the true weakspot of the story, otherwise we have truly been invaded by waifufags. Just take a look at the last few chapters: even if we had to take a break from constant slaying, at least the time could have been spent with some world building, but it's wasted on developing two love interests that absoutely everyone knows will never amount to anything.
