There's a right place for it, I think it should happen because romance that goes nowhere is frustrating but you are right about how it needs to do some groundwork first.

This concept was interesting, but - as far as I can remember - he wasn't kicked out of the party. The biggest disappointment is that the summoned Hero is actually a girl, and the native guy is Level 90 compared to everyone else being, like, Level 19 at most. That's sort of a waste of a premise.

A story that would work better is to have a protagonist who's weak, but who quickly comes to surpass the narrator. While the narrator struggles with jealousy, of course. I mean, the summoned dude is supposed to become totally broken in the endgame!

Fortunately we do get a fair amount of series that do put some effort into the characters and subversions tot he normal formula that are worthwhile.
