Konosuba is honestly fine playing playing its premise straight. The characters are still wacky, the jokes are still funny, the only difference is that Kazuma gets to be unironically successful. I get the feeling that the only people who dislike the turn the series has made are people who have a vendetta against isekai to begin with.

I agree with your statement, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say that all fiction is wish fulfillment. Going outside fantasy there are plenty of stories where the MC goes through shit that no one would willingly subject themselves to

What should make things interesting about going to another world is that the trip has to have a purpose in terms of the character and the world has to capture the imagination of the audience. They have to marvel at the mountains, gush at the architecture, be curious about the societies and have it all mirrored in the protagonist. He or she has to explore the unknown, the alien concepts to what they believe to be the norm. One of the problems with Isekai in Light Novels is that they fall back on one of three base settings, refuse to build up that wonderment and straight up turn it into what a bullied kid would scribble in their notebook about what they'd do if they could do anything they want with all the resources they can muster.

The thing is, if the guy is a loser where he came from, why the Hell does changing the geographical/temporal context of his/her circumstances automatically make him/her a winner if the circumstances don't have him addressing his flaws and shortcomings to proceed? That's not even getting into the fact that for some reason the protagonist is in possession of charisma he never had before without reason. It might be of surprise to this board, but being attractive to the opposite gender doesn't mean that you're automatically abhorrent to your fellow males. Being likable extends across both spans.

tl;dr : Give me a story. Not your third-person journal of how cool you think you are and how "we just don't see it".

It’s basically SAO but since the VRMMO the characters played turned on to run on literal magic the villainous dev went several steps beyond just trapping everyone in the VRMMO and actually created an entire alternate plane of existence to rule over and brainwashed everyone to believe they were true denizens of that reality rather than simply players. The VRMMO had a Holy Grail-esque battle royale that would grant the wish of the winner but the villain manipulated the winner into granting his wish of becoming a real princess ruling over a fantasy world instead.

That’s the story of the prequel/backstory of Re:Dive. Now everyone is living life in a fantasy world blissfully unaware of the truth except for the MC, who got hit with the brainwashing stick so hard he ended up with complete amnesia. The MC’s guidance fairy from the VRMMO visits him in a dream and tasks MC with awakening the true memories of everyone in the world and finding their way back home.

No matter how they start, no matter what the initial volume or two are like, they always ALWAYS end up exactly fucking the same shit. There is no excitement, no challenge, no interesting characters because everything has to revolve around LE CHOSEN ONE and his HIDDEN POWER and on and on.

There is plenty of enjoyable stuff to relax to, guilty pleasures and so on that at least have fun with themselves. Modern isekai is just trash in a way that is genuinely weird, there just isn't the sense of deja vu in most other stuff. Even things that previously seemed pretty same-y like typical long running shonen feel more unique between different series.

There are exceptions to that of course, and for some reason ancient isekai before it even really became a generally known thing was often pretty interesting (and wasn't harem and all the other trash that is constant now). I don't know why that went away to the degree it did.

I didn't have much of a problem with isekai until I saw that it was basically the only genre getting consistently fantranslated in manga and LN. When I saw a page of updates on Mangadex solely isekai, I was like "fuck this". Not even shounen's peak went that crazy.

LNs does smooth out some of the edges of the isekai

Shield hero was a lot more edgy and Naofumi was a bit more psychotic
Albeido was a character added to the LN and didn't originate in the WN (note how all the other floor masters has entire arcs focused on them)
MT had more focus on how Roxy was doing
Kumo desu ga had only a few chapters between when she became a Arachne and when she became a goddess in the WN
that Demon loli in Slime isekai had more chapters devoted on her

so yeah LNs are more about the waifus

Wish fulfillment is okay. The problem is that somehow, nip authors are unable to reconcile the fact that even despite pandering blatantly to the basement dwelling losers it's no excuse to be lazy with the storytelling. Turning every other male harmless, every challenge into an easy mode and have everyone praise your worthless ass feels good at first but it quickly becomes grating.

The premise never goes anywhere, a few chapters in the story always turns into "MC excels and wins at everything, everyone else is a dumb and easily impressed mongo". By chapter 10-20 MC is a demigod and punches Jesus and Satan in the face for great justice.

Writing successful isekai requires no skill or experience. "I'm an aspiring isekai author" is pretty much synonymous with "I'm an unemployed video game and cartoon addict without any qualifications". As a consequence the market is oversaturated with minimum-quality material. What you see adapted to anime is the absolute creme de la creme of the isekai genre, of tens of thousands of stories every year. And even those adapted top titles are still mediocre fan-fiction tier at best.
