actually ur all fuckin retards it's about mamoru oshii questioning his faith n using allegories & symbolism to explain the various stages of inquiry one goes through. The egg is supposed to represent the delicate psychological enigma of belief, which one fosters safe from any 'harm' or questioning as it were much like the girl in the movie protects her egg... from the man, who represents the harsh and inquisitory outside world, hence the column of tanks he rode in on, which not only represent martial power but also the noisy industrial society of which the man is supposed to be a harbinger of sorts.
That being said I don't think the film is a story about disillusionment much as it is about the psychological aspects of faith and the challenges attendant on it. Yes, the egg gets crushed, but this causes the girl to get transfigured into a woman, showing that oshii probably believed that knowledge was also a crucial element in the road to maturity of faith.
In the end I think it's fuckin stupid to be like "oh it didn't actually mean anything it's just aesthetic" or whatever. It just goes to show that ppl on this board can't detect the underlying themes & motifs cause they're all dumb as fuck... sad but true.
