The sources they adapt are better now IMO. I loved Violet Evergarden and Chunibyou.

Not to mention their backgrounds seem to have deteriorated in quality. There were quite a few backgrounds in Hibike that looked like garbage and were noticeably CGI. Compared to K-ON. Even some webms of VE (that people use to show off the "quality") have noticeably CGI backgrounds when the camera is moving.

It wasn't even a the top 3 best-selling anime in its own season.

I'll take a show with better production values, more sakuga, detail and consistency at the cost of a little post processing over some 3d infested slideshow ad by another studio.

That show is far too detailed for background sakuga in a tv anime. People usually praise it for having really fleshed out stuff like the famous background during the flashback in ep4.

Hibike is a bit of an exception with the 3dcg matching the more realistic style and giving their animators more time to work on the crazily detailed instrument sakuga. I only recall cgi backgrounds really being used to cut corners in Kyoukai but even that show had well above average production values by today's shit standards. Tsurune also actually has really good backgrounds(see attached image), when they're painted so their quality hasn't dwindled.

Kyoani just adapts stuff that doesn't need lots of CGI because it's mostly everyday stuff and character dramas. But even outside of that they still use CGI for vehicles just like every other studio, on top of for some backgrounds like other studios do too.

What influence has Kyoani had? People always say they're the best studio currently in existence but just being good doesn't make you influential if nobody is following your lead. Kyoani's just off in a corner surrounded by their dedicated fans while the rest of the industry continues doing what they want.

Kyoani are a part of the industry. By making extremely high quality anime they're dragging up the overall standard of production in the industry. They're also doing their part in bringing the industry away bad publishers like kadokawa by being a studio that self publishes. They even provide a good working environment for animators and give then a salary instead of paying them per frame.
