>GKIDS is planning an awards qualifying run for the film in 2019 with a theatrical release set for early 2020 in both the original Japanese and a new English language version. Weathering With You will first open in Japanese cinemas this summer on July 19.
>Should Weathering With You receive the same kind of critical and audience acclaim as Your Name did, then GKIDS’ involvement will be a major boon for the film during awards season. Shinkai’s earlier film, Your Name, was considered by many to be one of the finest animated features of its year and a lock for an Oscar nomination, but the film’s U.S. distributor, Funimation, was inexperienced with award season politics and failed to place the film in front of Academy voters. GKIDS, which has scored 11 Oscar noms for best animated feature — and managed to secure a nomination for Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai earlier this year (the first non-Ghibli anime to be nominated in the category) — should have no trouble getting Shinkai’s film the recognition it deserves.
>“GKIDS is thrilled to be working with Makoto Shinkai and Genki Kawamura on Weathering With You, following their blockbuster hit Your Name,” said GKIDS founder and CEO Eric Beckman. “We have been huge fans of Makoto Shinkai since his breathtaking 5 Centimeters Per Second, and he is unquestionably one of the top animation filmmakers working today. Weathering With You combines Shinkai’s unparalleled visually beautiful and detailed animation with a riveting emotional story that will be sure to connect with audiences worldwide.”
Imagine if he wins the Oscar. Disney would be utterly BTFO.

all of shinkai's works are just pretty visuals and a bland story

>Environment porn : The Anime Not that I mind.

>GKIDS is all about awards and critical recognition .
They have a FAR better chance in getting recognized in the movie award circuit than FUNimation can ever do
Austin Perry
Will this be Shinkai's first good movie?
Juan Bennett
Bland stories don't resonate with the hearts of the entire eastern hemisphere and catalyze the greatest selling japanese animation of all time.
Justin Wood
Funi totally dropped the ball on Your Name.
Robert Baker
Anime will never win awards. The >inexperienced with award season politics part says all you need to know. Awards are just industry insiders wanking their friends off.
Landon Baker
GKIDS are experts at getting nominations though.
Josiah Turner
Yet they still can't win.
Nolan Perez
They could next year.
Jordan Torres
They won't not with Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 in tow and this year is among the worst for western animation.
Austin Morris
The Oscars are getting tired of Disney. Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet lost, and that Frozen short that played before Coco wasn’t even nominated.
Oliver Long
They really did. Should have waited to the following year instead of trying to go against fucking Zootopia.
Xavier Thompson
At least Zootopia had a Cute Onahole. Rabbits and cats are the best as Living onaholes.
Jack Brooks
Yeah. Your Name could’ve easily been nominated instead of fucking Boss Baby.
Elijah Morris
>The Oscars are getting tired of Disney Nah Spiderverse just stole all the thunder and G Kids thought it was a great idea to push fuckung Mirai to the Future.
