But, there's plenty of trenches for the footmen and there's clearly a lot of footmen out there. The flying soldiers are the equivalent of aircraft in WW1. There was a lot of aviation in WW1. You're literally watching the show from the perspective of a Red Baron, so it only looks like there's nothing else out there. In reality thousands of foot soldiers die every day. So it's not changing the dynamic of how WW1 would be. The only difference is that magic is more powerful (If you suck being X's dick) and that a flying suit is more maneuverable/versatile than an aircraft.

Well to be more specific, it's more like a delayed WWI - it happens in the early 1920s IIRC, but aside from the anachronistic tech and magic it's clearly based heavily on the Great War, not the sequel. It really is a mashup of technology though; you've got WWI era artillery, aircraft, submarines, and battleships, inter-war firearms, and early-WWII tanks.
