like someone else said, edginess. rape is done for rape's sake sometimes, for shock value. take the Sacred Blacksmith for instance. the female protagonist's rape comes straight out of left field, it's never been a thing in the universe until that very specific moment. in Berserk's case it has been a long-established thing in the universe, but most of the rape in the series just happens because "oh maybe it's time for rape now I guess?" there are a few scenes where it "makes sense"; has a bigger meaning, but it's so heavy-handed it's not anything particularly "brilliant" or "necessary" for the story to progress. what kid Guts's scene tells us is that is just that, all of a sudden, "oh I was raped as a kid, too", it just adds artificial drama. Griffith also raping Casca was weird, although I will admit that it created an overbearing sense of hopelessness and helplessness, much like Farnese's (almost) rape scene with the demonic horse, and the king trying to rape his daughter (which works as a great character piece of the king's own deprivation). this is why I think Miura should just start doing porn. the majority of the sex scenes are pretty much just fetishism so why not go fully into it? the Mahou Shoujo crap and moe-blobs have already created a huge schism between the earlier and the current art styles and direction, along with the inane decision to focus on the slow part of the story for years now. >It made it so Guts has trust issues, due to Gambino betraying him (leading him to rely on his sword, that page where where he literally sleeps with it says it all)

>It also made it so he has problem with people touching him/intimacy (important later with Casca)

Basically, it explains why he was such a loner, relying on himself and his sword, and only that.

This then feeds into why he finds the Bands of the Hawks and Griffith so important, as people he can finally trust, and also into his relationship with Casca, someone with whom he can be intimate.

This in turns, makes Griffith's betrayal all the worse for Guts, it's not even putting him back where he was, Griffith pushed him in an even deeper hole.
