On anime movie scale it was good not great. It kept continuity and was on par with most One Piece or DBZ movies and when compared to Index III was it that bad?

It's kinda boring, it tries too hard to force relevancy on every character and its attempts at adherence to continuity hurt it more than it helped.

I think Kamachi should have instead tried to let loose, thrown continuity to the wind, and tried writing a story that he wouldn't normally be able to write given Index's timeline.

I can kind of agree with some parts of that. It had probably had too many characters all get their moment but I don't think keeping continuity hurt. The series cares too much for most people to be happy for it to just abandon it entirely. If they made another I would think having Nagai direct a Railgun original story that is just another SS heavy on action with high quality animation that a movie affords.

Generally, it's Kamachi who gives out the outlines for the stories, even for the anime-original stuff, but it's the one who's actually in charge of creating those stories who brings them to life. Given how many artists and directors work on Kamachi's stories, you can really get a strong sense of how their individual tastes can alter the way the story comes out. Look at how Index I adapted the Accelerator fight, then look at how Chuuya did it, then Fuyukawa, then Railgun S. There are strong difference between how each of them adapted that fight. Even Railgun S's version of the fight, which is supposed to be a straight adaptation of the fight from the manga, has some significant differences in terms of scene composition and framing. A difference in facial expression here, a change in angle there.

In the case of stories that he didn't originally pen for Index, he basically gives an outline and key scenes and dialogue to the artist/animators and they work out most of the finer details. The artists try to work more closely with Kamachi in order to flesh things out better, but the animators tend to vary. If the director decides to add a certain scene or force up a certain character's importance, he can do that. If you look at what Nagai's directed over the years, you can see a clear relationship in terms of his tastes. The reason Saten was brought to the forefront and made much more major a character is due to Nagai's preference for character focus. To Nagai, individual characters are more important than the overarching story, which is a problem because Railgun is just one part of a large interwoven world. Nagai does not care about that world, and he would happily completely ignore that world in order to give a certain character he likes extra focus. Connectivity to the larger world does not matter. A random Anti Skill officer is more important to him than that.

It's the director's job to make sure the story comes together properly, and if there are issues with the script, then the director has to fix it with the writer.

I think there is always a belief of that but I'm not sure we know who really has the power or final decision. Seems very studio and individual production dependent. If you have Urobuchi as the writer he is going to be calling the shots on the overall story and the director's main role would be story boarding the work. It assumes a lot of power and clout for a director with limited time to tell the writer we aren't doing what you wrote and we are going in a different direction. I don't think the railgun filler was good but I'm just not sure that any of the failures or successes in the series can be put on one person.

Mikoto's character in Index doesn't revolve around the clones, and it hasn't since OT8, it revolves entirely around Touma, unlike Accelerator, whose character has almost solely revolved around redemption and his feelings of guilt around about clones. If railgun ever goes to NT I'd guess we'd see her interact with her clones occasionally.

I think people's issue is that there was no improvement from S2 to S3 despite the gap in time, especially coming after Railgun S. I imagine people were expecting that level of production quality. It made the average animation look even worse. The weird SFX work didn't help either.

Does Horus magic produce less magic recoil? Mikoto only got headaches and nosebleeds from the AAA. Aliester was outsourcing most of his osiris stuff to possibilities but when he went full horus in NT22 he seemed to be ok. Accel only got a little bleeding when first attacked Neph and only after the offscreen fight did it pile up. Comparatively all the other espers nearly died casting one spell including Accel's past attempts.

Mikoto never used the AAA for anything magic related. The fact it hurt her at all is odd, and if anything, would point to the opposite conclusion.

I don't think most people would still call that "early NT". Either way I liked NT1 better than most of NT5/6 so the point is moot.

I considered the Othinus arc mid-NT but I think 5-6 and 8 were the most "fun" out of all of them for me.

I care about side characters. They were just boring ones. I liked Marian way more in the books afterwards than in NT4 where she was just being edgy for shock value.

That just ties into his desire to be normal. I don't think user would be far off to call his neck cracking a coping mechanism as a result of that desire, especially when he manages to finally crack it when he gets angry.

I could go on all day, but the whole volume was fun and unpredictable in a good way. I look down on anyone who says "hurr durr it was only good when Touma showed up at the end". Some people get way too antsy when the story does something other than suck Touma's dick, or any of the other 2 MCs and Mikoto for that matter.

As a Toumafag, NT4 was up there for my favorite presentation of his character. Seeing him as like an incoming threat was effective at showing how ridiculous he is. Almost like a reverse OT3 when Accelerator is slowly shown throughout the volume

Not the way people who are diehard fans of him would want. He was made to look good, but in a way that allowed for other characters to have their time to shine.
Compare it to something like Heavy Object volume 16, where Quenser's dick is sucked to high heaven and none of the side characters accomplished anything. Literally solved every problem by himself and some like Heivia are even made to look bad.

None of them were really that relevant in the volume though. Only Maria but her story was introduced and then wrapped up in one chapter and only resolved in NT8. And no matter what their motivations were in the end it just turned to "gotta save those faceless civilians"

He didn't do anything for the majority of the volume and there was no foreshadowing of him. He just disappeared after the first bait and switch chapter until the end.

What dynamic? The only ones who had a personality were Kagun, Enshuu and Marian. The other ones barely got a few lines in before getting wrecked.

But all the innocent people survived after Touma destroyed the holistic experiment that made everything edgier. Maria, Oumi and Saflee literally got revived from a heart attack.

Touma took out Loki though and stopped the Russian Roulette, you need to reread it. Instead of dropping him by name, the narrator went nameless with him outside of the beginning and end.

Those were both illusions from what I recall. Touma was "out of phase" with that Baggage City. He couldn't have saved anyone because he couldn't physically reach them. They both took each other out with their illusions.
