It's completely awful storytelling and makes the author a very, very bad writer. If you've never heard of the terms "deus ex machina" and "Chekhov's gun," they can be mildly applied to this situation as proof it shouldn't be there:
Deus ex machina is lazy-storytelling where the author, unable to resolve the current issue, relies on some unfathomably deific plot device to express to the audience it's beyond them and solved and don't think about it. A "god in the machine" where the author simply lifts a finger to press a button and the machine solves the unsolvable point and never addressed again. Something that makes no logical sense and is unrelatable to reality, but used by poor authors just so they can tell the story they want to without having to worry about the audience's judgment of the scene.
Anton Chekhov was helping correct another's work be telling him how to edit his story. Multiple times during Chekhov's letters to this other author, he mentions a gun becoming mentioned in the story. "In the next act/following chapters, that gun MUST go off, therefore. It's a promise to the audience made, and if you don't re-visit that element, you never should have made the promise. It should not be there."
In this case and how "artificial insemination works, but suddenly won't if you're an immune male" is PROOF of a promise being made because of how illogical that is, someone in power must be pulling strings which isn't IMMEDIATELY explored. "Chekhov's gun" doesn't "go off" and therefore that point never should have been there. Furthermore, it's a deus ex machina just so the story can retain tension and stress that "only 5 men can save humankind" instead of the obvious solution of "one sperm donation could result in MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS" of births, let alone how many donations could be made by these 5 men over the course of their rest of their lives (or their own sons in just a dozen more years thereafter). It's bad, bad storytelling.

This story fails by chapter 1 because it established a setting with obvious need and then introduces the character who recognizes this need but refuses to indulge in action towards it because of very poor reasoning. This same setting could easily be used for a good story, and this same character could be used if he actually had conflict! But he has zero conflict beyond, "please have sex with me!" "no, I don't want to!" "but it's better for everyone if you do!" "but my crush might not like me as much if I do, so I won't!" That never ends, and early on, we don't even know his crush is even alive. He's terrible.

This is a huge point. This male NEEDS to have sex with women. LOTS of women. DAILY. To the audience, she is believably dead (and literally not even in the story) for YEARS as they read the story.

You haven't ran into some of the crazies that are out there I see. I've met way more feminist types who claim that Civil rights shouldn't exist because it gets in their way to have people disagree with them and that the world would be better if their nation state murdered their enemies then I've heard a right-winger say the same. Though this is all just personal experience so I may just be unlucky in the people I meet day to day.

It would be pretty chaotic to wipe out a gender though. No matter which side you pick very few people on the other will want to be extinct in the future even from a slow method like making all the children one gender. So the only real way that could happen is if one group got ridiculously more power then the other and somehow thought it was a good idea and was lucky enough to have enough people agreeing with them. Which seems impossible with how close both genders are.
I have honestly always wanted to see a science fiction kind of storyline like this. Like a futuristic humanity decides to do experimentation on what kind of structures form in a mono-gender society and so build a bunch of humans and drops them to see what happens. Could be interesting to see with a decent writer what kind of insanity would happen.
