Is he the best anime director ever? Or just the king of pretentiousness
Is he the best anime director ever? Or just the king of pretentiousness
He wrote and directed Angel's egg as his first big original work. That alone puts him leagues ahead of most of the directors out there, not only anime but from world cinema as well.
>not only anime but from world cinema as well
His live action movies are horrible
>Implying his anime films aren't on par with the best from works cinema
Honestly I liked sky crawlers the most. His style just fits the story perfectly. Also heard that the original author really liked the movie despite it being very different to the novels.
That's a big exaggeration. I like Angel's Egg, but Oishii pretty much just aped Tarkovsky's directing style in it. That final zoom-out is taken straight from Solaris.
>Implying great directors don't copy others
Every single director has done that. Oshii himself said in an interview that copying isn't bad, it's how you copy that matters. In the end it's meaningless if you can't make something good out of it.
neither of them. just average.
>not only anime but from world cinema as well.
that's a tautology
I'm in no way implying that Oishii is a bad director, and I already said that I like Angel's Egg. I'm just saying that it's more than a bit absurd to claim that because Oishii debuted with Angel's Egg he should be viewed as on the same level as the great directors of world cinema when Oishii's directing in the film is so indebted to the style of another director.
