He wrote and directed Angel's egg as his first big original work. That alone puts him leagues ahead of most of the directors out there, not only anime but from world cinema as well.

Attached: Angels-Egg-Poster.jpg (1280x720, 117K)

>not only anime but from world cinema as well
His live action movies are horrible

>Implying his anime films aren't on par with the best from works cinema

Honestly I liked sky crawlers the most. His style just fits the story perfectly. Also heard that the original author really liked the movie despite it being very different to the novels.

That's a big exaggeration. I like Angel's Egg, but Oishii pretty much just aped Tarkovsky's directing style in it. That final zoom-out is taken straight from Solaris.

>Implying great directors don't copy others
Every single director has done that. Oshii himself said in an interview that copying isn't bad, it's how you copy that matters. In the end it's meaningless if you can't make something good out of it.

neither of them. just average.
>not only anime but from world cinema as well.
that's a tautology

Attached: top_banner.jpg (600x638, 203K)

I'm in no way implying that Oishii is a bad director, and I already said that I like Angel's Egg. I'm just saying that it's more than a bit absurd to claim that because Oishii debuted with Angel's Egg he should be viewed as on the same level as the great directors of world cinema when Oishii's directing in the film is so indebted to the style of another director.

Is he Oshii?

Ghost in the Shell is pretty great, yeah.
But have you seen The Red Spectacles and Stray Dogs? Those the prequels of JinRoh... and are literally hideous

>But have you seen The Red Spectacles and Stray Dogs?
Baby tier next to the horror of Talking Head. I love how they baited Otaku in with misleading cover art that has like seconds of screentime in this monster of liveaction metanarrative.

Attached: talking1.jpg (800x800, 104K)

>otaku fly in spider Oshii's web "look at all the anime!"
>the trap closes, their mind destroyed by the horror to come

Attached: talking2.jpg (800x800, 139K)

I looking for it everywhere....
I know it's not an anime, but I heard it very hard to follow. Massive explanations, japanese "humor", gore, psychedelic...is this better than lain?
Red Spectacles seems like a cheap Apocalypse Now and Stray Dogs a cheap Sonatine.
Well, still better than Garm Wars. Damn, that was awful

Kanji to the right with furigana says "Oshii Mamoru."

Could be another dude with the same name

Hit or miss. I hated Innocence so fucking much.

>is this better than lain?
If anyone thinks the bit of philosophy in GITS 2 is bad, this is 1000x worse. Like an exercise in the driest Godardian self-reflexive narrative about...movie making? Auteurship.

Lain's plot is exponentially clearer than this...and Lain has late 90's "end of cel era" hand animation going for it at the very least which also puts it waaaay ahead here.

Talking Head is simply brutal - it's hard to say it's bad or good.

>it's hard to say it's bad or good
That's the problem with all Oshii's works

>Oishii
umai*

Whoops, don't know how I got that extra "i" in there... and I did it three times. Embarrassing.

four times*

Every first work from an author is basically molded according to his favorite author

Mamoru Oshii on dogs

I named my first NEC computer Basset 68,000 and I still keep its brain, its hard disk, in a drawer. I can never throw it away.

Women run Japan and not in the right direction. Japanese wives boss their husbands around, and the smartest way to deal with these overpowering women is to give in to them. At home, I behave just like a dog: I show my appreciation to my wife and always apologize in advance, even if I have done nothing wrong. Of course, she gets mad anyhow, so it is best to stay at work. I think this is universal, though: Men are struggling and losing out to stronger women, but I find many foreign women a lot gentler than their Japanese counterparts.

Dogs have instincts, and it’s wise to follow them.I adore my two dogs, Daniel and Gabriel, and I listen to them; if they like someone, he or she is definitely a good person.

Animals need more protection. My dream is to set up an animal rescue force, similar to those that exist in other countries, where the officials not only help animals but have the authority to arrest those who hurt them.

Those who torture animals deserve severe punishment. I feel like giving them all the death penalty because it’s the worst kind of crime, and I rather suspect that such predators usually move on to children next. Also, if a man hurts a woman, he should get a life sentence.

Pamper those you love while you can. Atami, in Shizuoka Prefecture, has the best climate for my dogs, so I moved there. We walk the mountains, take onsen (hot spring) baths together and enjoy the good life. They eat better food than me. I get soba noodles and they chew on veggies, meat and rice. They deserve it!

One can never be the same after losing a loved one. I’m in constant fear about the inevitable death of my two dogs, Gabriel, 13, and Daniel, who is maybe 16 now. I’ll never be the same without them. Even now, I have a big hole in my heart for my cat, which died years ago.

what a cuck

Why not both?

Pretentiousness.
His movies appear to be sort of "deep" and "philosophical" on the first glance, but they are pretty shallow for the most part.

What a retard.

>but I find many foreign women a lot gentler than their Japanese counterparts
What? I thought japanese waifu were the most gentle in the world

Did Oshii really write this?

t. animal abusing, child-raping, incel hikki shutins of chan.

Oshii sets a model we should all aspire to, with the exception of being pussy-whipped.

Probably.

Attached: 462fa960.png (243x304, 99K)

Yes, I've seen those individual quotes in various interview translations he's done over the years.

I own 10 dogs. Oshii is a fucking retard, no way around it.

There are so many things wrong with this.

I wouldn't argue otherwise. The poster whom I was originally replying to (not sure whether he's you or not) claimed that the fact that Oshii debuted with Angel's Egg alone is enough to secure him a place among the great directors of world cinema. My argument is that that's an outlandish claim to make because Oshii had not come into his own as a director at that point and was still very obviously mimicking one of his favorite directors, namely Tarkovsky. You rightly say that authors' debuts always bear the imprint of their favorites; however, the great authors are seldom remembered for their debuts, but rather for their more mature works in which they write with a distinctive and recognizable style, one that they have developed by synthesizing the styles of their favorites while adding something new and unique from themselves.

I can't suffer Oshii. The glacial pacing, the autistic characters, the """humour""", the obligatory drawn out and contrived philosophical debate in the middle of the movie.
Every interview that I've read making him seem like a complete idiot certainly doesn't help.

Attached: 1553882752112.jpg (704x480, 51K)

The UY2 movie is great, basically a theatrical example of his free-form weird improvisations on the theme of UY like his TV episodes.

Attached: uy2.png (640x480, 372K)

>The sun might be the star but for us Japanese, the leading role belongs to the moon. We prefer the moon’s poetic atmosphere to the power of the sun. We have many beautiful stories about the moon which gently reflects the sun’s light. This is how Japanese want to be: always second, never showing off. I am like that, too. I am so glad Hayao Miyazaki is the number one anime director

Seemed like he was going somewhere cool with this, but then it just ends up being a massive cope.

>Hayao Miyazaki “cannot direct” – he is “less than second-rate as a director.” “There is no coherent clear story”. “Mood” and “ideas” dictate his films and “there is no logic”. Meanwhile, Isao Takahata turned into a “shit intellect” who created “propaganda films.”
What did Mamoru mean by this?

Attached: https _blogs-images.forbes.com_olliebarder_files_2017_03_mamoru_oshii_interview-1200x675.jpg (960x540, 53K)

That's interesting. Why Oshii said Miyazaki was the best anime director in 2007, but then 10 years later he destroyed him with such strong words?

I love Oshiis movies, but all I'm really getting from this thread (unfortunately) is that he's a butthurt moron if any of these quotes are even true.

>japantimes.co.jp/life/2007/03/13/people/mamoru-oshii

They're great but they're just literally not cinema, retard.

why?

Only DW Griffith is c i n e m a, amiright?

> I have tons of things I want to say about Takahata-san, -laughs- but Grave of the fireflies attracts my attention most. That's an immoral world, since it's a story of incest. And the image of death is lined up right behind it. In that sense, it was an erotic movie, and it gave me chills.

This is a great interview on Oshii and Ghibli:
nausicaa.net/miyazaki/interviews/oshii_on_mt.html

>In that sense, it was an erotic movie

Attached: th-this guy might be an idiot.png (713x554, 320K)

This thread is really ruining any respect I ever had for this guy...

B-but Grave of fireflies isn't an incest movie...
Is he an idiot, or just a butthurt?

are you crazy? Japanese women literally control their bf/husband money

...

Oshii has been friends with Miyazaki for nearly 40 years and he was at Takahata's funeral as well. Personally, I think Oshii respects them as creators (and vice-versa) but there might be a conflicting and elaborate thought war between them sometimes where they disagree on small details and occasionally this boils into spite. I just see it as Oshii wanting Miyazaki and Takahata (and perhaps himself in a self-critical realization) to be more self-aware and better.

I-is this serious?

Imagine if this was an anime
>youtube.com/watch?v=vWqJwEHMBnY

Kek I love his hot takes. He exaggerates but always with a core of truth I feel.
If not for him we wouldn't have the legendary drunk miyazaki pedo quote.

Why are anime directed by Oshii so good, but live actions so bad?

>the legendary drunk miyazaki pedo quote.
nani??

>Why are anime directed by Oshii so good
Are they though?

Well, they are praised by critics.

I thought Jin-Roh was an Oshii's movie

He wrote the script.
Okiura should really stop pretending to be a director anyway, Jin Roh was fine but Momo was unwatchable.

Angel's Egg is a Masterpiece. Period

Attached: angels egg.png (1920x1080, 3.34M)

>Those girls are innocent plants for Miya-san. His mind is like a little girl who is standing beyond the mirror. I still don’t get it though. I guess it’s barely different from mine. I have no idea, because I have never been interested in an actual little girl, or child. But he has. When he got terribly drunk, he suddenly shouted “What’s wrong with falling in love with a 12-year-old girl?” That was obviously his true colours.

Attached: 1447104593767.png (706x494, 133K)

I wonder how Miyazaki felt about the girl from Angel's Egg.

so wataten is basically miyazaki's biography

chief director

So, who's the tastier director?
Oishii or Umaishi?

animation =/= cinema

He is certainly a visionary. Really looking forward to his new anime coming next year after 12 years. Loved Sky Crawlers.

He is certainly the best alongside Kon.

Oshii is a filthy commie and he should be hanged. I bet he doesn't even worship the emperor

Attached: Rumiko Takahashi.jpg (275x470, 31K)

>bet he doesn't even worship the emperor
Why should he? He made the superior movies in the UY franchise.

Not even close

Nope

Where can i download Talking Head

I've tried watching Patlabor2
Damn, it was boring

>doesn't even worship the emperor
Based

I hope the next anime isnt like Patlabor tv

red spectacles, talking head and stray dog are good. the later output not so much

Is she a lesbian? Never any mention of being involved with men in interviews, unless she uses her manga millions to buy pretty young host bishounen as sex slaves.

Good? Have you seem them? Those are trash. Even Kitano and Sono can do better

Isnt Avalon good?

Can i directly see Beautiful Dreamer without knowing anything of UY?

Yes. Character backstory is useful, but not at all necessary as they are basically "actors" in Oshii-world here.

So they arent the "same" characters of the tv series? I see.
Is it the same with Patlabor movie 1&2? Can i watch them without knowing anything of Patlavor tv/ova?

I can claim that about anything. It's hard to prove it by just claiming it, though.

Have a good day, son.

>So they arent the "same" characters of the tv series?
Well, it's the same thing that happened in a lot of the Oshii UY TV episodes too with Oshii philosophizing and weird shit replacing much of the usual Takahashi antics - which worked out for the best.

P1 and P2 standalone pretty well, the background is nice to have to understand the character motivations but those movies were the first Patlabor I saw.

Why his live actions aren't as good as his movie?

Is Innocence inferior to Ghost in the Shell?

Ghost in the Shell has great sound and visuals and relatively little pseudophilosophical dialogue. Innocence has meh sound and visuals and a lot of pseudophilosophical dialogue. Do the math.

So, innocence should be miles better. Is it philosophycal like lain?

Probably? I found Lain a bit sketchy.
Innocence doesn't explore it's themes all that deeply but it's actually pretty well rounded. You might like it.

Is Patlabor2 any good?

>that's a tautology
No it isn't? Quality A makes him above most in group A (which is a smaller part of group B), and even above most in group B.

Like Innocence it's well rounded without going into depth but the script is overall better. It also has similar but better visuals and atmosphere.

This is of course assuming that most anime isn't already better than most cinema, so i get what you were saying, but it isn't really tautological, since it depends on subjective perception.

>Tarkovsky
aren't Tarkovsky movies not deep at all?

How about Beautiful Dreamer? And Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai! and Twilight Q? Mid-tier shit?

watch them

where'a Talking Head?

Not here.

Why would he worship a man whose claim to power is because he was born into a family that had enough wealth to keep power through the threat of violence in the means of an army?

Based

No wonder why Yea Forums loves Miyazaki he's ourguy

nothing is "deep"

Yes and no. But it's a great film

I like to think that Beautiful Dreamer is UY characters suddenly being self-aware and realizing they've been repeating the same antics over and over again like some kind of purgatory and collapsing. You could watch it without the TV series but a lot is lost

They've been rumors since the 80's but Takahashi mangas are very homophobic and conservative, unless it's a situation similar to Nobuko Yoshiya, a lesbian writer that popularized the Class S genre (gay until graduation) despite she lived with her lesbian partner until her dead. You know, do what I say, not what I do.

Considering how hard Takahashi clashed with Oshii during the TV show production and how she directly interfered with Only You for blocking most of Oshii's ideas, leaving Oshii very frustrated with the movie but Takahashi claiming it was her favorite movie, I think she's a dyke because otherwise these two would fuck like rabbits.

>until her dead

>Oshii's last TV episodes are a two-part about a classist crash between Mendou and Ataru
What did Oshii mean with this? The fact that the epilogue is everything going back to the old status quo make it even better. Yeah, it ws because the show will be still going without Oshii but dead of the author

Yes.

I will do a /jp/ thread for the live actions

What if Beautiful Dreamer was about the beautiful socialist dream turning into a nightmare? It came around the same time the Khmer rouge's atrocities became public knowledge. The Japanese left were mostly maoists
