A pet peeve of mine is when readers call characters 'dense' for not understanding something that's obvious to readers. Almost always, this complaint is levied against the male rather than the female, despite usually there being mutual culpability in perpetuating their shared misunderstanding. I don't think either of these characters are dense. I think you have to put yourselves in their shoes.

So, there has been a bit of a seesaw of sorts, where one is in a position to put pressure on the other to acknowledge their feelings. Right now, Chizuru is the one being pressured to admit. When he asks her, flatly "We're not dating, are we?" She says 'No." This is interesting to me, because I think I understand.

They don't seem to want their relationship to advance, but they also don't want to see their relationship revert. It's because I think they are happy, and they fear that if anything would change between them, they might cease being happy. They're in a comfortable place where they offer so much emotional support and intimacy, but because of their unique circumstances they can do so without having to show any real vulnerability.

I think the truth is Chizuru doesn't want it to end, and the grandma thing on both ends is simply an excuse. He became super close to forcing a massive change in their relationship by casting aside that ruse. Maybe she thinks it would be awkward for her, but she is by no means 'trapped' by this fake relationship as she likes to suggest. She was to be freed this very night, yet she instead trapped him back into it. They know what's going on, but they are frightened that things might change and not necessarily for the better. So, the dance continues. It will take an external force to really break them out of their comfort zone so they feel more inclined to take a chance. Mami, get crackin'!

It's understandable that it's hard for Chizuru to handle her emotions.

He may like her, but all in all he is just a regular customer and from her pov he doesn't want more, in a way he is ok to share this experience with hundreds maybe more of other potential boyfriends, so he doesn't treat her as someone he wants to cherish, but as someone who provides him with a service.
It's probably also the reason why Ruka's kiss have shaken him enough for him to want to end it.
