Jump manga used to be Japanese, you're right that they usually cater to the West now but you are completely overstating how Japanese it is right now (which is barely at all). If anything, you picked the wrong manga. They have a manga that's only kept around because it's about the national sport of sumo, a manga about jujutsu, a manga about shogi and one based on Journey to the West (which is technically Chinese but Japan has more ties to Chinese culture than China does).

The stereotypical Jump "sports" manga like Slam Dunk or Haikyu or Captain Tsubasa or Hikaru no Go or Eyeshield 21 or Hinomaru Zumo or Dancing Midgets or Robot Laserbeam or whatever else is always about either a protagonist who is just learning about the sport or a protagonist who is enthused about the sport and causing everyone else to take an interest in the sport and see it as a serious sport. The effect is always causing kids who read it to get an interest in the sport and they always go very much into detail about specific rules and other stuff that a reader might not now. Kuroko is not about legitimizing basketball, it assumes everyone already takes basketball seriously and all the important characters are already legends with histories. It could use any sport as the background, it could use fictional sports. The manga is about the friendship of the main characters, the extra effort the weakest guy has to put in to save his friends from themselves and the victory he gains in teaching them all to enjoy life again and stop hating each other. It's basically the perfect Jump manga (not my personal favorite but it's up there).

Hibike is a good example since they went /u/bait there even when the LN had both of the girls being straight as fuck.

The entire concept is nothing like other Jump sports manga. The world is pre-built and fully established and was always about his mysterious friends who are all on different teams that are so far above him but that he needs to beat. Your average sports manga could have ended abruptly after any arc and just established that it taught you about the sport (like Slam Dunk did) but Kuroko would not have worked any other way. It's more like a battle manga than a sports manga.

Many sports manga are just battle manga where the battles are sport matches. You're very autistic about the definition of sport manga, it's not like battle manga isn't a wide genre that can be about friendship and whatever shit you want too. Kuroko is a sport manga because they spend the entire manga playing sport. The MC plays basketball, his friends plays basketball, the important characters play basketball. Shit like Free is just a fujo dramafest where swimming is the backdrop, but the setting and events are still swimming, it's that's what they consistently do, so it is a sports anime.
