Strength, edge and leadership but in a believable form. Female characters tend to not have what it takes to break through a plot or be threatening and controversial like male characters can. Even the best written female character cant raise a manga on a new level as well as a equally well written male one, and if they try to sell her off as over-competent it usually feels like a mary sue asspull.
The madder, fearless and self-sufficient a male character is the better.
