In a perfect world, the ending of 4.0 is just a second beach scene where original timeline Shinji and Asuka are having a picnic some indeterminate time in the future in a much better place than they used to be, and the credits are laid over an extreme long shot of the apocalypse while they walk home holding hands, and we can all go home and finally move on from this fucking show.

Asuka and Shinji have the same internal issues (intense feelings of loneliness, depression, all-consuming desire to be loved and cherished by others brought on by the lack of affection from meaningful parental figures, self-hatred and self-esteem issues, need for validation, and most importantly too scarred from their history of abandonment to try and reach out to others and closing themselves off instead to prevent being hurt), and given this they are the only people on the planet that can understand, empathize with and really be there for each other when they need it. Asuka is Shinji's only way to get a good end in life by the time the series starts, and vice versa. They will be broken and miserable people until the day they die without each other, completely alone in the universe.

There are people in this thread that will try and tell you otherwise, but that paragraph is law. That is how they were written to be.

You're giving him too much credit. Gendo's attitude towards Rei doesn't change between 2 and 3, and it's a shock to him that Rei's attitude toward him had changed. They're modular to him, he didn't spend any time rebriefing 3 where he could have noticed and filled in her memory, he sent her to Ayanami Rei's home and expected her to still be with the program.

It's not that hard to understand the main message, you just need to pay attention and pause evey now and then to digest the info.

When they realized Shinji was in Unit 01 and other various hiccups in the plan they were noticeably put off but literally went "Oh well, whatever happens, happens". It really might not have worked at all, because Rei wasn't their plan and she performed a very visible function collecting people and conducting them to the Black Moon, which she was also operating. They might have destroyed Shinji's ego, gotten Longinus into EVA-01 to form the Tree of Life, and then just killed everyone with anti-AT expecting the souls to be attracted to it.
